Buffalo Trace ADD receives bicyclist and pedestrian education grant

New school safety education program to begin this fall

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 7, 2011) – The Buffalo Trace Area Development District (BTADD) recently received a $10,000 bicyclist and pedestrian safety education grant from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

“We plan to implement a bicycling educational program in all schools located in the Buffalo Trace Region,” said BTADD transportation planner Kerri Moran. “The program will begin in the fall of 2011 and will teach school children from kindergarten through eighth grade about bicycle and pedestrian safety. Our goal is to instill safety habits into the daily routine of each child while encouraging them to ride their bikes or walk safely to school.”

The award was part of the Paula Nye Memorial Bicyclist and Pedestrian Education Grant program. It is funded by citizen contributions made by the purchase of the Kentucky “Share the Road” specialty license plates.

The grant program is named in memory of Paula E. Nye, who served as the Transportation Cabinet’s bicycle and pedestrian coordinator from 1999 until her death in 2005.
