Cell Organelle Assignment Choices
There are three (count ‘em 3!) choices for this activity. Sign up for your choice in class.
Option #1 Cell Organelle Résumé
Note: This is an individual assignment.
Résumés are in “all over” the news these days. Football coaches are caught lying on theirs. Web sites are willing to add phony items to your résumé to “guarantee” you get a job, without getting caught cheating. Whenever you apply for a “real job,” a résumé is important!
Your task is to write a résumé of your own for one cell organelle. All information should be accurate and up-to-date. Use the format shown below this paragraph.
Name (of organelle)
Address (cell type and specific location within, if any)
Objective (what the organelle is looking for “in a perfect cell”)
Experience (what the organelle does; its function)
Related Experience (if this organelle can “multi-task” or perform a unique function in certain conditions, describe that here)
Hobbies/Interests (use your creativity to describe what your organelle “likes to do” when not-working or on vacation)
References (other organelles or cells that might provide verification of the information; include why they are a positive reference)
Sign up for an organelle in class. You may do a résumé for an organelle not on this list, if you get your choice approved by your instructor prior to the due date. Remember: Your goal is to sell your organelle to a potential employer cell!
Your résumé should be detailed and creative. It should show some honest effort in locating specific information from a source other than your textbook. You will need more specific information than the lung ad provides if you expect to receive full-credit for the assignment.
There are, of course, other résumé formats you might choose from. If the format you choose is not the one above, you must get approval of your format prior to the due date, or you risk losing credit for “format violation.”
Ö Include your source book(s) and/or url references at the end of your resume.
The following organelles/part's are all appropriate selections. No more than 3 students will be allowed to write ads for any organelle on this list.
Golgi apparatus / Cilia/Flagella / Nucleus / Endoplasmic ReticulumVacuole / Chloroplast / Mitochondria / Microtubules/Microfilaments
Lysosome / Centriole / Ribosome
Option #2 Cell Organelle Classified Ad
Note: This is an individual assignment.
The following are classified advertisements that might have appeared in a newspaper. While they are not real ads, the information is accurate.

One advertisement is for an artificial heart. As you can see, your heart is an amazingly heavyduty organ. The other is for a human lung, at least as complex in different ways.
Your task is to write a classified advertisement of your own for one cell organelle. Sign up for an organelle in class. You may do an ad for an organelle not on this list, if you get your choice approved by your instructor prior to the due date. Remember: Your goal is to sell your organelle!
Your ad does not need to have quite as much detail as Dr. Brand's, or be as creative as the other sample, but it should show some honest effort in locating specific information from a source other than your textbook. You will need more specific information than the lung ad provides if you expect to receive full-credit for the assignment.
There are, of course, many other print or electronic advertisement types you might choose from. Whatever format you choose, you must get approval of your format prior to the due date, or you risk losing credit for “format violation.”
Ö Include your source book(s) and/or url references below your ad.
The following organs/part's are all appropriate selections. No more than 3 students will be allowed to write ads for any body part on this list.
Golgi apparatus / Cilia/Flagella / Nucleus / Endoplasmic ReticulumVaculoe / Chloroplast / Mitochondria / Microtubules/Microfilaments
Lysosome / Centriole / Ribosome
Option #3 The Whole Cell Catalogue
Note: This assignment option requires a group of at least 5 students.
There's not much that you can't buy by mail-order any more. There are catalogs for just about anything you can think of. Your task in this assignment is to create a catalog for something that there is not be a market for yet… but you never know about the future. Your catalog will be for the major organelles in a cell.
1. Form groups as instructed by your teacher.
2. Decide which individual in your group will be responsible for the catalog page describing each of the following organelles
Cell membrane / MitochondriaRibosome / Endoplasmic reticulum
Golgi apparatus / Cytoskeleton (flagella, cilia)
3. Use textbooks or other references to look up information on the organelle you were assigned.
q Design a page in your catalog for your organelle. Your page must include a typewritten description of your organelle and its function, the sales pitch, a pricing structure, and a full-color diagram to illustrate your "product." Notes: 1) Original art is preferred. However, if you download diagrams from the Internet or a CD-ROM: a) be sure to include appropriate reference citations. b) be aware that some diagrams are big files that might not print—try printing before the morning this assignment is due! 2) All organelle prices in your catalogue should be comparable.
q Be sure to leave a 1" margins on all edges.
q Your group will need to design a cover for your catalog and produce a Table of Contents that will be the first page inside the cover of your catalog. The TOC should be done last. Use this format
Organelle / Author / Page # / Points*Cell Membrane / J. Student / 1
Mitochondria / Ima Kid / 3
*Your instructor will fill in the "Points" column.
7. Your final grade on this assignment will combine your individual page grade with a "group" grade for the entire catalogue.
This assignment will be graded on
accuracy & completeness of description / neatness & how well you followed directions / creativity.Make it goood!
