Online Classroom: www.schoology.com
Required Text: Principles of Chemistry
Course Goals: This course will focus on the major concepts of Chemistry along with collaboration between Mathematics and Biomedical Sciences.
Content: This course will be following the ACT Quality Core Standards for Chemistry including the following:
· Scientific Inquiry
· Mathematics and Measurement in Science
· Science in Practice
· Introduction to Chemistry
· Properties of Matter and Gasses
· Formulas and Equations
· Microscopic Nature of Matter
· Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding
· Solutions
· Kinetics, Equilibrium and Thermodynamics
· Acids, Bases and Salts
· REDOX Reactions and Electrochemistry
· Nuclear Chemistry
Grading Procedures: Students will be graded according to the seven areas of the Elkhorn Crossing report card. Students will be made aware how each assignment fits into these areas.
1.) Content - This grade reflects the student’s mastery of the course content.
2.) Work Ethic/Effort - Reflects the student’s commitment to complete assignments & attend class.
3.) Collaboration - This grade reflects the student’s ability to work in a group.
4.) Critical Thinking - Reflects the student’s ability to analyze & synthesize information.
5.) Writing Mechanics - Reflects the student’s mastery of grammar, spelling, & literary content.
6.) Project - Reflects the student’s progress/completion of class project(s) with accompanying research.
7.) Presentation Skills - Reflects the student’s ability to present information effectively to a audiences.
Class Web Page: All students will be required to sign up for a Schoology account. This is where students will be able to access classroom documents, take online assignments, and find make-up work. Students will also be asked to use the Khan Academy web site that they set up in Mrs. Wells’ class to assist them with some of the mathematical concepts of chemistry.
Make-Up Work: Students are responsible for making arrangements with Ms. Orear to complete any missed assignments. Class work and homework can be found on the classroom schedule or the Schoology web page. Homework assigned prior to an absence must be turned in the day your return. Alternative assignments will be substituted for missed laboratory experiments, group projects or presentations. Students have ONE WEEK to turn in missed assignments and make arrangements to make-up any missed tests, quizzes or presentations.
Late Work: Late homework will be accepted ONE DAY after the due date for half credit. Late projects and lab reports will only be accepted if turned in by Friday of the week they are due and will be deducted work ethic points. Late presentations must be scheduled after school no later than one week after the original due date and will be deducted work ethic points
Lab Safety: Students will be required to sign a lab safety contract, pass a lab safety quiz, and maintain proper safety protocol and procedures to participate in laboratory activities. Any laboratory activities that are missed due to students not following the safety procedures will result in a ZERO for that laboratory.
Discipline Referrals: Students who fail to follow the school, village or classroom rules will be given detention.
Grading: The year-long project for the Biomedical Science Village will be worth 20% of the students’ final grade. Classroom content, including homework, tests, quizzes, projects or other assignments will be the final 80% of the total grade. These can change at the discretion of the teacher throughout the year with proper notification.
This syllabus must remain in your Chemistry notebook for the entire year.
