Schriever Chapter Air Force Association Scholarship Program Operating Instructions

The Schriever Chapter of the Air Force Association sponsors annual scholarships for Company Grade Officers (Active Duty, Reserveand Guard), enlisted personnel, and civil servants in the Los Angeles area. Los Angeles AFB; ROTC Detachments at USC, UCLA, and LMU; and any DCMA or other airmen stationed in the Los Angeles AFB area are eligible. SMC personnel assigned outside the Los Angeles geographic area should apply for scholarships with the AFA Chapter in the area in which they are assigned.

The Chapter will award scholarships annually to provide financial support to airmen in the Chapter’s geographic area. The application requires the following:

  1. A transcript (if in progress) or proof of enrollment/acceptance (if first term/new student)
  2. Letter of Recommendation from applicant’s Commander/Supervisor (O-5 level or above)
  3. A standard Air Force résumé no longer than two pages. Include duty history and volunteer/community activities with dates.
  4. Category (CGO, enlisted, civilian) of applicant.
  5. Disclosure of any GI Bill assistance.

The Education Office will verify if the applicant is using tuition assistance. Financial aid will be taken into consideration during the review of the application. The deadline for applications is 31 May of each year. Applications should be submitted to the Los Angeles AFB Education Office. After the selection board, selected recipient applications will be mailed to the Base Scholarship Officer, AFA Schriever Chapter 147, P. O. Box 394, El Segundo, CA 90245.

The Chapter will award two $1,000 scholarships in each category ($500 per semester), subject to budget approval annually by the Schriever Education Foundation. If there are not enough qualified applicants in any one category, the Chapter Scholarship Officer can shift approved scholarship funding to a category with qualified applicants to ensure the support reaches deserving applicants.

The SMC Education Office will work the administration of the board. The Chapter will provide board members to participate in selecting scholarship winners for each category (CGO, enlisted andgovernment civilian). At least two Chapter members will serve with Air Force personnel provided by the Education Office (for a total board size of six) to select winners. AFA will recognize the scholarship winners at the CCAF graduation ceremony or at one of the SMC quarterly awards ceremonies.

Winners will be selected based on the following:

  1. Strength of Air Force record.
  2. Applicability of degree or certification program to Air Force mission.
  3. Financial need (other sources of financial aid, e.g., tuition assistance).
  4. Supervisor recommendation.

The intent is to award the scholarships each summer to provide assurance of finances prior to the fall semester/trimester/quarter of each academic year. Actual dates of boards will be scheduled by the SMC Education Office.
