Peeta Mellark

Peeta Mellark is the most important character after Katniss in the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. He makes the journey to the Hunger Games with Katniss. A brave young man, Peeta is a wildy changing major character throughout the novel. He is the ultimate dynamic character. Peeta and Katniss are the two tributes from District 12. At first, Katniss associates his random act of kindness of secretly giving her bread, with turning her life around – maybe saving it. Then, on the road to the Games, Katniss thinks she realizes that Peeta is actually plotting to kill her, making her think he’s a safe ally so he can easily eliminate a tribute. Later still, he feigns love for her in front of the entire country on television, but Katniss knows this is only to get sponsors on his side. Then, during the Games, he teams up with the hated Career Tributes on hunts, and she hates him more. Finally, when the tributes learn that both tributes from a district can win together, Katniss starts to thing Peeta’s been pushing for that all the time. The two “lovers” team up and support each other. Peeta proves an excellent companion in the Games. So, Peeta is ultimately a protagonist.

Rue

Rue, a tiny, clever little tribute from District 11, is an important minor character in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. She is a protagonist, fighting against odds with as much goodness as is possible, given the situation. Rue is a static character. She changes very little during the book, although we learn more and more about her as her friendship with Katniss develops. Her harvesting homeland is as poverty and hunger stricken as Katniss’s and, through this connection and others, they form a loving bond during the two days they know each other. Rue is tricky and quiet. She flies through the trees and spies on other tributes, collecting plants and berries to eat. She and Katniss devise a plan to take out their most dangerous competitors’ food supply and while they separate to carry it out, Rue is killed. Katniss grieves her death deeply, and takes a vow to win for Rue at her deathbed. This is when she sets in stone her flaming desire to win.

Prim

Prim, or Primrose Everdeen, is Katniss’s beloved sister and a minor character in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. She is more symbolic than she is part of the plot, and is certainly a static character. Prim is a protagonist. She really helps cultivate her older sister’s better nature. Katniss mentions multiple times that Prim is the only person she is sure she loves. The sisters share a close relationship during the novel, and when the younger is called at the female tribute for District 12, the elder steps in for her. Upon leaving for the Games, Prim makes Katniss promise she will win for her. Throughout the Games, she thinks of Prim when all hope seems lost, and knows she must push on. Prim is a symbol of love and innocence in the novel, and shows how the Capitol evilly uses the population.

She hunts with him at the beginning of the story, and they share game and plants and sell them together. They supply food for their families by hunting illegally together. He is really handsome, and a great companion. He is a static character because he is not part of most of the story or plot.
