ASCE-SEI COMMITTEE ON COLD-FORMED MEMBERS

SUMMARY OF MEETING ON JULY 15, 2010

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA

1. Attendees: Don Allen, Jay Larson, Ben Schafer, Cris Moen, Scott Douglas, Fernando Sesma, Perry Green, Jim Crews, Ed Kile.

2. Old Business:

· Ed Kile summarized the sessions, posters, and awards nomination that were sponsored by this committee at the 2010 Structures Congress.

3. Current Business:

· 2011 Structures Congress: Ed Kile reported that two sessions have been proposed by this committee. The titles of the proposed sessions are: “Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Steel and Metal Building Systems” and “Designing Connections for Cold-Formed Steel Members”.

· Wikipedia: Ed Kile reported for Nabil Rahman that the Cold-Formed Steel Wikipedia page is receiving 2000 visitors per month. It was indicated that the section on International Codes and Standards will be expanded. Cris Moen volunteered to assist with some of the editing that is needed to improve the quality of the Wikipedia page.

· Richard Kaehler will be nominated by this committee for the ASCE-SEI Walter P. Moore, Jr. award.

· Technical Paper Review: Cris Moen reported on technical paper review activity.

4. New business:

· Potential new activities for this committee: It was suggested that a committee could be formed to monitor, edit, and improve the Wikipedia page. It was suggested that a new ASCE-SEI publication entitled “Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction” could be utilized to generate additional papers focused on cold-formed steel member design.

· Committee mission statement. The mission statemant for this committee was revised to the statement that appears at the next page.

5. Next Meeting: February, 2011 in conjunction with the American Iron & Steel Institute Committees on Framing Standards and Committees on Specifications meeting.

Previous Mission Statement:

To disseminate and interpret information on the behavior and design of structural steel members, cold-formed to shape from flat materials, and to stimulate research and the publication of technical papers in this field of activity.

New Mission Statement:

To disseminate information on the behavior and design of thin-walled cold-formed steel; to stimulate research; and to promote the publication of technical papers and other resources in this field of activity.
