Art Gilman I Choose Film because I agree with the photography critic who remarked, "It is a waste of eye to shoot faster than the mind can think." My work has followed a progression from early attempts to document my travel in a reportage style, to more recently allowing myself the freedom to experiment with less traditional subject matter. I had the great fortune to begin studying with Stephen Schaub several years ago and have learned from him the technical and artistic versatility of film when it is thoughtfully linked to modern processing and printmaking. The ability to make full frame photographs on film with unobtrusive and mechanically robust rangefinder equipment in sometimes difficult or dangerous circumstances has been a great source of confidence, particularly in my early years. At this point, film is an old friend.
