Animal Abuse: A Reflection of Our Society

I.  Introduction

  1. Hook- Imagine her droopy eyes staring up at you, yearning for you to pet her and love her the way that she loves you.
  2. Transitional Sentence- Unfortunately, sweet puppies like the one you have in your imagination are often neglected or abused.
  3. Thesis Statement- If mandatory jail time is a consequence for animal abusers, there would be a drastic decrease of animal abuse in our society.

II.  Subtopic #1: Different Forms of Animal Abuse

  1. Topic Sentence- Animal cruelty can be exhibited through physical abuse, neglect, and forced performance.
  2. Physical abuse: physically hurting the animal, causing the animal unnecessary pain, etc. (Source Card #2)
  3. Neglect: not providing proper care, food, shelter (Source Card #4, Source Card #5)
  4. Forced Performance: training animals for fights or performances for personal benefits (money, gambling, entertainment) (Source Card #2)
  5. Transitional Sentence- Animal abusers lack self-control and compassion and should have consequences for their inhumane treatment of animals.

III.  Subtopic #2: Helping the Helpless

  1. Topic Sentence- Animals cannot communicate their needs and fears to get the help they need, so it is society’s responsibility to prevent animal abuse, care for abused animals, and punish those who abuse animals.
  2. Prevention- organizations in our community who educate others about animal abuse (source card #3)
  3. Prevention- what family, friends, neighbors can do to prevent animal abuse (source card #3)
  4. Care Providers-community organizations that take in and care for abused animals (source card #3)
  5. Punishment-lawmakers create laws to punish those who abuse animals (Source card #1)
  6. Punishment-Hawaii animal cruelty laws (source card #1)
  7. Punishment-Push for more serious punishment for animal abusers (source card #6)
  8. Transitional Sentence: Animals cannot take control of their own situations and provide themselves with better food, shelter or care-takers, so animal lovers and those who care about the treatment of any life are taking action to protect animals.

V.  Conclusion

  1. Interpretation of Information- Signs of animal abuse, society’s responsibility to care for animals, organizations that can help
  2. Overall importance of information presented- The way people treat animals is a reflection of their character, so it is safer for everyone if the community is made up of people who are compassionate, loving, and responsible.
  3. Restate thesis- Creating tougher laws to punish animal abusers sends a message to society that animal abuse cannot be tolerated any longer.
  4. “So what?”- Make a difference by properly caring for your own pets and reporting animal abuse to authorities.
