University of Alberta Research Experience (CSC)

The University of Alberta ResearchExperience (UARE) is a research internship program allowing top senior undergraduate students from key partner universities to conduct research at UAlberta under the supervision of faculty members who are experts in their field.

Students gain hands-on, practical research experience in their academic discipline andreceive a stipend. The China Scholarship Council provides financial support for up to 30 students from Chinese institutions to participate in the UARE (CSC) program.

When are placements available?

UARE (CSC) internships are available during the summer. Internships are 10-12 weeks in duration, and typically take place sometime between mid-June and mid-September.

Eligibility

Ideal participants will meet the following criteria:

  • Senior undergraduate students. Students should be entering their 3rd year of studies or higher when the internship takes place.
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at a designated institution. For the UARE (CSC) program this includes any of the 39 ‘Project 985’ institutions.
  • Have a minimum Grade Point Averageof 3.0 or B on a 4-point scale (or equivalent etc).
  • Past UARE participants are ineligible.

Program Highlights

University of Alberta International provides full support for participants before, during and after their placement. A formal orientation, professional development seminars, academic networking opportunities, and a poster symposium are all offered to program participants.

Opportunities to participate in cultural and social events such as city festivals or day trips to nearby attractions are offered on a weekly basis. A trip to the Rocky Mountains is made available to every intern.

2016 UARE (CSC) Timeline

  • November 30 (2015): Research projects are posted online.
  • December 1 – December 31: Students apply to UARE (CSC) projects AND to the China Scholarship Council for funding.
  • January 1-14: China Scholarship Council reviews applications.
  • January 18 – February 1: UAlberta professors review applicants to their projects who were pre-selected by the China Scholarship Council.
  • February 1- February 15: Selected applicants will be contacted.
  • Mid-June – September: Internships take place.

  • Two academic references (submitted directly from the referee via the system)
  • Proof of English Proficiency (this is optional, but preferred by many professors; TOEFL or IELTS are the favoured forms of documentation)
