Dear Parents,

This spring all students in the state of Maryland enrolled in grades 3 through 8 as well as students taking Algebra will participate in the second year of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).Federal guidelines require the state of Maryland to assess students in the areas of Reading and Math annually. Students in 8th grade have already been assessed in the area of Science this year.

The testing window begins April 10th and ends May 31st.During thiswindow, your child will participate in both ELA and Math testing using a computer device to access the test. Different grade levels will participate in the tests over the course of the testing window according to our school’s testing schedule. Testing will take approximately two hours each day, for six days – three days for ELA and three days for Math.

6th & 7th grade students will test READING April 25th, 26th, and 29th(7th grade in the AM, 6th grade in the PM).

6th & 7th grade students will test MATH May 9th, 10th, & 11th(7th grade in the AM, 6th grade in the PM).

8th grade students will test READING May 1st, 2nd, & 3rd and MATH on May 16th, 17th, & 18th(in the AM)

Students will work independently during testing. The test will include multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions. Individual student results will be returned in the new school year. Scores will show how well your child has learned the Reading and Mathematics skills identifiedin the Maryland State Curriculum. You will also learn how Samuel Ogle Middle School students performedon the assessment.

It is extremely important that your child is in school on time on each testing day. Students arriving after testing has begun will not be allowed to test with their regular testing group, ratherthese students will need to complete the assessment in a make-up session on another day prior to the close of the testing window in May.

Please note that personal electronic devices including: cell phones, pagers, hand held computers, MP3 players, iPods, etc. WILL NOT BE ALLOWED in any testing room. ALL students will need to leave these devices in their lockers or at home. All needed testing manipulatives are provided by the school.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD DOES HIS/HER BEST JOB. PLEASE MAKE SURE:

  • your child arrives at school on time on each testing day.
  • your child eats a nutritiousbreakfast in the morning to provide him/her the necessary energy and alertness for participation in testing.
  • your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before each testing day.
  • your child is in school every testing day.
  • your child is encouraged to do his/her best.
  • your child is reminded to leave electronic devices in lockers or at home.

Thank you for your assistance. We know our students will do their best! Should you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Charlton at (301) 805-2641 or via e-mail at .

Sincerely,

______
