Discuss the overall mission of the committee as it relates to AIPLA’s vision, mission, and values

The South Pacific subcommittee educates the AIPLA membership on the South Pacific region in general including economic factors, the benefits of protecting IP in the region, IP procurement trends, and the pitfalls associated with the different IP systems.

The South Pacific region is also referred to as Australasia or Oceania. The countries of interest to the AIPLA membership include Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and neighbouring islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The South Pacific subcommittee will create a resource enabling the AIPLA membership to access information on trends as well as specific IP requirements within particular countries.

Plans for stated meetings

Give presentations on IP protection in Australia, New Zealand, and other specific countries of interest. Update members on current IP initiatives and proposed law changes.

Public education

Prepare articles, make available materials relating to intellectual property in the South Pacific, coordinate webinars, and deliver public presentations.

Member service

Prepare articles, make available materials relating to intellectual property in the South Pacific, coordinate webinars, provide input to local IP institutions engaged in the amendment of local IP legislation across various countries, inform members of developments as and when they arise concerning IP matters in the South Pacific, circulate summaries of IP enforcement cases from various South Pacific countries, and provide updates on current status/capabilities of IP registries following country visits.

Global outreach

Arrange participation and speaker slots at various IP conferences and events within the South Pacific region.
