Knox County Schools, TN / I Didn’t Know You Did That!! / Career and Technical programs are some of education’s best kept secrets. We must be aware that not everyone understands what today’s Career and Technical Education is and what our CTE students are capable of. This presentation will provide examples of ways to market your CTE programs while providing students an outlet to apply both technical and soft skills required in today’s demanding workforce. Students are able to create portfolios and receive recognition for their achievements while having fun in the process. Through Capstone projects, students provide opportunities for business, industry, community leaders, teachers, and parents to get a first-hand view of the world of Career and Technical Education. LE

McNairy County Schools, TN / There’s a Hole in the Bucket / The challenge of attracting, training, and retaining teachers is complicated by the alarming rate at which teachers are leaving the profession. With nearly 50% of all new teachers exiting the profession in the first five years, school administrators face a daunting challenge. Utilizing a methodical, customized three-year induction program, the McNairy County School District in rural West Tennessee maintains a remarkably high retention rate among novice teachers. In this workshop, the coordinator of the New Teacher Academy will share the program framework and reveal strategies that aid the district in plugging the hole in the proverbial bucket. NT

Founder & Chairman Whitebox Learning / 3D STEM Engineering: Whitebox Learning / Engage your students in the complete engineering design process. WHITEBOX LEARNING is a complete standards-based applied STEM learning system that allows your students to build, analyze, and simulate their designs hundreds of times before building their physical models. Then, precise manufacturing templates can be printed in order to build their physical models. Our STEM Applications include Gliders 2.0, Dragster 2.0, Structures 2.0, Green Car 2.0, Rockets 2.0, Mousetrap Car 2.0, and Prosthetics 2.0. Students can complete their designs virtually, from any browser, 24/7, all around the world... How cool is that?! PS

PD Trainer Odysseyware / The Modern Learner—Engagement and the Digital Native / Many CTE instructors believe that engagement “takes care of itself” due to the nature of the CTE environment. However this is a critical error as engagement and guidance in today’s modern CTE classroom is even more vital than ever before. The modern learner as Digital Native is an important concept to understand as it will inform and change your approach to student engagement. Develop a more complete and applicable understanding of the concept of an active learner and explore the two most powerful teaching/learning techniques in education. Learn the five foundational methodologies of the “Dynamic” classroom model and incorporate everything with an engagement checklist. PS
Cello A / Paul Rutledge Training Masters, Inc/Reletech / Improving Technical Instruction with Classroom Response Systems / Classroom response systems (CRS) have been utilized in education for a number of years, but are relatively new to the CTE community. Now CRS can be used to help increase CTE students’ technical competence. Discover how the Philadelphia School System worked with NOCTI and Training Masters to establish an interactive system to assure that students are competent and prepared for certification exams. This session will include a demonstration of this innovative collaboration. PS

Knox County / Growing Effective Partnerships / The days of working in our own silo have become an element of an era long gone. Emphasis placed on national industry certifications, Common Core, and integration requires that we utilize every tool available in our arsenal. Growing effective partnerships with local advisory councils, academic peers, and our post-secondary partners strengthens our ability to provide CTE students with quality educational programs that prepare them to be college and career ready. These partnerships can also help provide students with benefits like CTE dual credit/dual enrollment, apprentice scholarships, high wage job placement, as well as the ability to earn an associate’s degree at the same time they earn their high school diploma. NCSU / Searching for the Wizard of Oz / The keys points are: (1) we are not in Kansas anymore (CTE must be on the cutting edge); (2) we need a brain (evidence is presented about the benefits of CTE and some of the deficiencies of the “go to college and be a success” mentality, many folks don’t know the value of CTE. CTE does have a brain); (3) we need a heart (it is important that we don’t forget the reason we exist is because of students; job training, end of course tests, etc are important but the students are the most important); (4) we need courage (CTE educators need to be willing to try new teaching methods in the classroom and specific suggestions are made); (5) there is no Wizard of Oz (We are responsible for our own). CTE Mentor Wilson County, TN / Raising Graduation Rates—CTE mentors / Presenters will share a strategy to help 9th and 10th grade students pass their academic and CTE classes and stay on track to graduate. Based on (Wilson County) CTE report card data, we felt that getting students enrolled in a CTE program of study would significantly increase their chances of graduating. We implemented a CTE mentor program in our high schools and we will share our implementation program and our success in this venture. NT
