The service will embrace the ethos of the Recovery Model.

The service will endeavour to provide the earliest possible detection of psychosis, intervention and prevention of relapse.

  • Build meaningful long-term relationships with the people using the service.

All approaches – medical, psychosocial and psychological will endeavour to make use of existing research evidence.

Develop innovative practice rather than being bound by dogma. By this is meant that there will be an ongoing exploration and development of best practice options.

Problem led focusing on the reduction of distress with an emphasis on managing symptoms rather than diagnosis led.

Age, culture, sexuality and gender sensitive with a specific focus on young people.

Develop and maintain a close working relationship with other relevant agencies.

Recognise & understand the needs of families and carers.

Raise awareness of psychosis within the wider community as well as within all health settings.

General Information /
Description of Service and Client Group / The Early Intervention in Psychosis service will:
  • Reduce the length of time young people remain undiagnosed and untreated
  • Develop meaningful engagement, provide evidence based interventions and promote recovery during the early phase of illness

The service will provide a user centred service, which focuses on young people from the age of 14 to 65 with a first episode of psychosis and remain engaged with them for up to 3 years.

Work Pattern (Start, finish times) / The normal hours of operation will be 9.00 to 5.00 Monday - Friday, with flexible evening work depending on client/carers need. Out of hours advice is available 24 hours perday via Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment (CRHT).
Dress Code / UoS Student uniform in conjunction with NHS IOW dress code policy

Staff / rest room facilities / Room available to make tea & Coffee, Hospital canteen on site.

Recommended reading/Websites / The Oliveira Library is based at St Mary's Hospital in the education centre and provides a full library service to all NHS employees on the Island, students on placement and other groups by arrangement. A reference service is also available to the general public.
