Early Republic Unit Notes
Causes of the War of 1812: What were the British and Americans fighting over?
- Interference with U.S. Merchant Ships
◦British: Were at war with France (1793-1815), and wanted to stop anyone from trading with the French
◦Americans: Wanted to trade with anyone
- Impressment of Americans into the British Navy
◦British: Claimed the right to force any British citizen to join the navy, even if they were sailing on American ships
◦Americans: Claimed the British were lying, and kidnapping Americans
- British Supported Natives against U.S.
◦British: Were afraid American expansion west could threaten British Canada
◦Americans: Wanted to spread west and remove the Natives
End of the War of 1812
- Fighting was more or less even (neither side conquered anything)
- The peace treaty mostly returned thing to how they had been before the war
- Many Americans took pride in the battles they won during the war, and the natives in the west were largely defeated
- But with France defeated in Europe, the problems of trade and impressment went away
Race, Ethnicity, Nationality
- Race is based on biology- physical features
- Ethnicity is based on culture- people who share the same culture have the same ethnicity (language, religion, art, practices, basically everything you do)
- Nationality is based on where you live (or were born, or have citizenship)
Monroe Doctrine
- Stated that European nations were not allowed to interfere with North and South America (couldn't invade, colonize, etc. as they had done for centuries). If any European nation did this, the United States would respond (possibly even by declaring war).
- As the United States became more powerful, though, sometimes the US itself has interfered with Latin America (ranging from peacekeeping and enforcing laws/agreements to invasions, theft of natural resources, and assassinations- however you want to interpret it).
Economic Systems
- Mercantilism: Government gives advantages to certain private businesses over other ones, and tries to restrict foreign companies (e.g. Britain gave the East India co. a tea monopoly, and told colonists they could not buy tea from the French)
- Free Market Capitalism: Businesses are privately owned, the government protects private property, but allows individual people to make their own decisions and fend for themselves
- Socialism: Businesses are owned by the government, with the goal of providing everyone with a decent standard of living (e.g. there usually are no homeless people in socialist countries)
Rise of American Capitalism
- The American Colonies had been run under mercantilism to make the British rich
- The United States became capitalist and protected capitalism
- Private property and contracts are protected in the Constitution
Good or bad?
- Supporters say anyone can become rich
- Critics say the rich stay rich, the poor stay poor
