Welcome to Science. Our classroom is often loud, a bit chaotic, pretty messy, hopefully fun and definitely educational.

A Day in Room 213

  1. Some days begin with a review from the previous day’s lesson, if necessary.
  2. New content, activity, or a laboratory experience. Laboratory, and activity, experiences will vary. Students will work individually, in pairs, and in small groups. Students will have numerous opportunities during the week to work collaboratively with their peers. Labs will be done in school. The results and conclusions may be done at home.
  3. Student’s may begin homework, if necessary. I will attempt to minimize homework assignments.

Classes will utilize bi-directional questioning. Students are encouraged to ask, and answer, questions. It is my goal to call on each student at least once every class, when not engaged in group/lab activities, and provide numerous opportunities to read aloud in class. Students will have many opportunities to shine.

Students are encouraged to take notes and use supporting materials via my wiki. Quizlet and other materials are provided to help your student attain information mastery and to help your student prepare for assessments.

Student Technology: At times students will be allowed to use their personal technology in class. Texting, phone calls, web surfing, or other uses not specifically allowed by the teacher will result in students losing their tech privileges.

Student Expectations

  1. The students should bring a pencil, notebook paper,science binder and completed assignments.
  2. Students should have homework completed prior to class (when assigned).

Assessment

Students are assessed regularly. Students are not judged solely by formal means (quizzes/tests). Students have opportunities to work on labs, group projects, and various writing assignments.

Students receive advance notice of quizzes/tests. Tests may consist of multiple-choice, fill in the blank, short answer, extended response, and other forms of, questions.

50 Before I’m 50

On October 31st I am going to run a 50-mile race in Chicago. In order to help keep me motivated, I invite students to help me finish the race while helping their community. Students may select a charity of their choice (some minor restrictions apply) and make a donation. My family will match the first $50 of the first 50 donations. This is completely voluntary.
