5th STEM Day Extravaganza 2016 at Morgan State University by Baltimore MUREP Aerospace Academy(BMAA)

A Summary

The Baltimore MUREP Aerospace Academy (BMAA) project at Morgan State University hosted the 5thSTEM DayExtravaganza on Saturday September 10th, 2016 in the Hill Field House on Morgan’s Campus. The event ran from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Hill Field House at 1700, E. Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21251. The BMAA Day Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Extravaganza was a fun-filled day of various hands-on minds-on STEM activities for students from PK to 12th grade, their parents/family members and the general public. The day’s event was designed to encourage youth to pursue careers in STEM at the post-secondary level and provide parents and family members with educational materials and techniques on how to keep their children interested in academics, especially the STEM field. There were numerous FREE educational materials and opportunities about STEM for PK-12 students, teachers and parents. Exhibitors and presenters from various national, regional and local STEM organizations and agencies were present to provide a wide variety of hands-on STEM activities for participants. The exhibitors included: AECOM, American Chemical Society, American Society for Microbiology, Army Research Laboratory, Baltimore MAA Instructors, Benjamin Banneker Museum, Bio Eyes, Can Manufacturers Institute, Exelon Corporation, Maryland Science Center, MUREP, Paragon TEC, NASA Glenn Research Center, National Electronics Museum, NIH Center for Scientific Research, Northrop Grumman, Baltimore MAA STAR Lab Planetarium, Space Telescope Science Institute, U.S. Air Force AETC, U.S Coast Guard and United States Geological Survey. The following organizations contributed STEM educational materials that were distributed at the Extravaganza: NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Solar Dynamic Observatory, WERQ FM-92Q and NASA- GSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center). This was a free event for the whole family and was featured. By the end of the day's event, we had a total of 511 participants in attendance (311 PK-12 students and 200 adults of which 50 were exhibitors). Walker, Deputy Division Chief Office of Education, NASA GRC. Ms. Priscilla A. Mobley, MUREP Aerospace Academy (MAA) Activity Manager, NASA GRC gave a talk entitled “A Word About MUREP Aerospace Academy”, while Ms. Joyce Cummings, Senior Project Coordinator Education Support Services brought “Greetings From Paragon Tech, Inc.”. Ms. Carmen Holmes, Family Involvement Coordinator for BMAA read and presented the site director, Dr. Jonathan Wilson the State of Maryland Governor’s Citation conferred on BMAA and a citation from the Mayor on Baltimore.
