Students should plan to work from 1 (one) to 4+ (four or more) hours depending on which project(s) is/are chosen. Parents help as needed, but never “do it for them.”

DUE DATE: This project is due on Friday, November7, 2013 Please plan ahead to avoid running short on time, asNO LATE PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

PROJECT CHOICES:

POSTER (85 Points )

Create a full colorposter like you might find on the wall of a real book store. Include the book's title, author, and publisher information. Your poster must contain an illustration that gets people interested in the book. Use ordinary poster board at least 20" x 30"(or even larger). Your name and the date of completion must appear on the back of the poster.

DIORAMA (90Points — Extra Credit)

Create a diorama. A diorama is a miniature scenecreated in three dimensions (3-D) by placing objects, figures, etc., in front of a painted background. This diorama must show an important or memorable event/scene from the story. Use an ordinary shoe box (or any similar-size box: about 8" x 12" x 16") as the background. All inside (background) surfaces of the box must be colored, covered or illustrated to become the background for the scene; no plain box may be showing as part of the scene. Also, this project requires a written description of the diorama. This writing must be at least one paragraph long. The focus of this writing is to act as a kind of caption for the scene in your diorama. Attach this writing to the outside back side of the diorama. Your name and the date of completion must appear in the top right hand corner of this writing.

NEWSPAPER (100Points)

Create a front page from a newspaper (use poster board or construction paper, about 12" x 24" or larger) announcing the discovery of Karana on the island. This project should look a lot like a real newspaper, with a title for the paper at the top, along with the date and edition information (look at a real newspaper front page to get things right). Your front page must have at least 3 (three)different articles focused on the discovery, the life events, and/or the rescue and the new life of Karana. Each article must have its own title and some type of picture, drawing, or diagram (along with a caption for each). All writing for this project may be hand-written or typed on a computer, but like a real newspaper, blank spaces (areas of plain background area) must be kept to an appropriate, limited amount. Your name must and the date of completion must appear on the back of the newspaper.

CHAPTER 30 (100 Points- )

Create a new, final chapter for the book in which you explain what happens next to Karana. Does she find the other villagers or not? What does she become in the "real world"? How does she earn a living? Where will she live? What does she feel? What surprises her about her new life? What problems does she face? Explore these or other questions through your writing. Get creative, but also remember that this new chapter should seem as if it really belongs with the whole story. It must "fit" the rest of the book, and "feel right."Write from Karana’s point of view, just like Scott O’Dell did. This project requires two to three typed pages (an adult may type for you... the font size may not be higher than 16, the line spacing must be set to single space, with standard 1" margins). Also, acomplete, hand-written draft (that you, the student has created) must be turned in along with your final typed copy. Content, grammar, spelling and page formatting will all be assessed for this project. Title your writing,Chapter 30. Your name and the date of completion must appear at the top right hand corner of the first page.
