Professional Development Program

Application Cover Sheet

Purpose:

This professional development program offers faculty members and staff the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary group of colleagues to study critical thinking in more depth, with the aim of enhancing pedagogical delivery to students. Topics to be addressed include the cognitive science of decision-making, implicit vs. explicit instruction, elements and standards of reasoning, and best practices for course and assignment design to facilitate student critical thinking.

All interested DSC faculty (including adjuncts) and staff are welcome to apply. Up to 15 applicants will be selected to participate in the 2018 class.

Successful participants will:

  • Attend one orientation session during Spring Planning, six one-hour workshop meetings in the spring, and a session during Fall Planning; while also completing concurrent online discussions via Falcon Online
  • Review and discuss, Learning to Think Things Through: A Guide to Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum by Gerald Nosich (provided free of charge to participants), and other writings pertaining to critical thinking pedagogy
  • Generate a capstone project (such as a new class assignment) to enhance student critical thinking

Deadline for application submission is Monday, December 4, 2017.

Workshop Meetings during the spring semester are scheduled from 4:00pm-5:00pm on Tuesdays, for the following dates: January 30st, February 1th, February 27th, March 27th, April 10th, & April 24th.

2. Approval from your supervisor for participation.
