· Stranded on an island
· Stranded in an elevator
· Stranded in the classroom
· Stranded on a cruise ship in the ocean
Read your scenario and your supply list. You must come up with two rescue plans:
· The first plan (Plan A) must include a way to send a SOS message using sound waves.
· The second rescue plan (Plan B) involves any type of SOS message, doesn’t have to include sound waves.
Remember, you can only use the materials provided in your scenario. Plan A must include the vocabulary terms amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and medium.
Your scenario is: ______

Part IV Grading Rubric:
You may or may not present your two rescue plans to the class, time depending. Your plan should include background information, your given scenario, and two well thought out written summaries of your plans with an annotated map of your rescue plan. You may present anyway you would like with approval (Video, google slides, board, skit).

Scenario 1: Stranded in the classroom
The Bay Area has just experienced the largest, most destructive earthquake since 1989. You were at school in science class, when the earthquake occurred. During the earthquake, the school building was destroyed, and you and some of your classmates are trapped inside the classroom.
Using your knowledge of sound waves and the equipment/materials you have in the classroom, you and your classmates must design a plan to send a rescue message to firefighters outside the building.
In the classroom, the doors and windows have been locked by fallen debris. Once classroom window appears to have a very small opening, but it is too high to reach (even when standing on a desk). Two of the lab station sinks have been destroyed, and the water is flooding into the classroom. One of your classmate’s notices electrical wires that have been exposed and expresses her concern about the water and electricity. You and your classmates have tried yelling for help; however, the room appears to be sound proofed by all the rubble- no one outside can hear you. You and your classmates need to call for help ASAP!
Materials in the classroom:
· Fire extinguisher
· Yard stick
· 4 tables
· 8 chairs
· Stapler
· metal tubing that fell from the ceiling
· Hazard cone
· fallen rocks and pieces of the building
· large pieces of glass
· Science text books
Scenario 2: Stranded on an Island
You are setting next to your very best friend on an airplane on your way to the Caribbean. Unfortunately for you, the plane CRASHES! You and your friend are the only survivors on an isolated and remote island in the Pacific Ocean. You must send a rescue message for help.
Materials on the island:
· Rocks and branches found around the island
· Wheels from a broken suitcase
· Your teddy bear
· Harry Potter Book

· Metal scraps from the plane debris
· A broken radio, that goes in and out of service
· glass bottle

Scenario 3: Stranded in an elevator
The Bay Area has just experienced the largest, most destructive earthquake since 1989. You were in an elevator, when the earthquake occurred. During the earthquake, the building was destroyed. You and some others are trapped inside the elevator.
Using your knowledge of sound waves and the equipment/materials you have in the elevator you and your classmates must design a plan to send a rescue message to firefighters outside the building.
In the elevator the door has been stuck shut by something on the outside and it will not move. There is a small opening at the top of the elevator, but you are not sure what you would find if you go through the opening. There is water sinking into the elevator from the door as if there is a flood on the other side.. You and the other elevator riders have tried yelling for help; however, the elevator appears to be sound proofed by all the rubble- no one outside can hear you. You and elevator friends need to call for help ASAP!
Materials in the elevator:
· Fire extinguisher
· Briefcase and items inside: pen, pencil, paper, whiteout
· metal tubing that fell from the ceiling
· women’s high heeled shoe
· items in a purse: wallet, lipstick, metal nail files, coins, credit cards, paper money and hair pins
Scenario 4: Stranded on a cruise ship in the ocean
You were on a cruise ship for mid-winter break and there was a horrible storm! Luckily, the ship seems to be mostly intact but you and your friends are stuck in your room on the ship!
Using your knowledge of sound waves and the equipment/materials you have in the room, you and your friends must design a plan to send a rescue message to the rescue team outside of the room.
In the room, the doors and windows have been locked by fallen debris. One window appears to have a very small opening, but it is too high to reach (even when standing on a table). The sink in the bathroom is broken and is starting to flood the room. You and your friends have tried yelling for help; however, the room appears to be sound proofed by all the rubble- no one outside can hear you. You and your friends need to call for help ASAP!
