Purpose / This unit standard is for people in the dismantling and recycling industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to dismantle vehicle mechanical components; clean and store mechanical components; dismantle vehicle electrical and electronic components; and clean and store electrical and electronic components.

1Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to - Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Resource Management Act 1991; Traffic Regulations 1976.

2Definitions

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to - company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Service information may include but is not limited to – technical information of a vehicle, machine, or product detailing operation; installation and servicing procedures; manufacturer instructions and specifications; technical terms and descriptions; and detailed illustrations. This can be accessed in hard copy or electronic format and is normally sourced from the manufacturer.

Suitable tools, materials, and equipment means industry approved tools, materials, and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task in a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.

3For this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is obtained in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.

4Special safety precautions are necessary when handling high voltage systems (above 24 volts including hybrid vehicle systems) and air conditioning components. Vehicle manufacturer instructions for the removal and storage of these systems must be strictly adhered to.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Dismantle vehicle mechanical components.

Performance criteria

1.1Safe working practices and service precautions are observed throughout the task in accordance with service information and legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety, safety of others, vehicle safety, workshop safety, environmental safety, tools and equipment safety;

service precautions may include but are not limited to high-voltage electrical systems.

1.2Suitable tools, materials, and equipment are selected and used that enable components to be removed in accordance with company requirements.

1.3Mechanical components to be removed from the vehicle are identified in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeinstructions from the supervisor, consulting the workshop manual, inspecting the vehicle.

1.4The process and method of removing components from the vehicle are determined in accordance with company requirements.

1.5Mechanical components are removed from the vehicle without damage to the components, and adjacent parts and fittings in accordance with company requirements.

Outcome 2

Clean and store mechanical components.

Performance criteria

2.1Safe working practices are observed throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety, safety of others, vehicle safety, workshop safety, environmental safety, tools and equipment safety, cleaning equipment safety, storage safety.

2.2Suitable tools, materials, and equipment are selected and used that enable components to be cleaned and protected in accordance with company requirements.

2.3Mechanical components are cleaned of dirt and grease, so that their condition can be determined, in accordance with company requirements.

2.4A verbal condition report of the components is given to the supervisor in accordance with company requirements.

Rangevisual inspection, measurement, comparison.

2.5Mechanical components are lubricated, so that corrosion and seizure are prevented during storage, in accordance with company requirements.

2.6Mechanical components are labelled and stored in accordance with company requirements.

2.7Storage records are updated in accordance with company requirements.

Outcome 3

Dismantle vehicle electrical and electronic components.

Performance criteria

3.1Safe working practices and service precautions are observed throughout the task in accordance with service information and legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety, safety of others, vehicle safety, workshop safety, environmental safety, tools and equipment safety;

service precautions may include but are not limited to high-voltage electrical systems.

3.2Suitable tools, materials, and equipment are selected and used to enable components to be removed in accordance with company requirements.

3.3Electrical and electronic components to be removed from the vehicle are identified and their condition verified in accordance with company requirements.

3.4The process and method of removing components from the vehicle are determined in accordance with company requirements.

3.5Electrical and electronic components are removed from the vehicle without damage to the components, and adjacent parts and fittings in accordance with company requirements.

Outcome 4

Clean and store electrical and electronic components.

Performance criteria

4.1Safe working practices are observed throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety, safety of others, vehicle safety, workshop safety, environmental safety, tools and equipment safety, cleaning equipment safety, storage safety.

4.2Suitable tools, materials and equipment are selected and used that enable components to be cleaned and stored in accordance with company requirements.

4.3Electrical and electronic components are cleaned of foreign matter, without causing damage to their operation, in accordance with company requirements.

Rangeascertaining the viability of cleaning from manufacturer instructions, using manufacturer approved methods.

4.4A verbal condition report of the components is given to the supervisor in accordance with company requirements.

Rangevisual inspection, ascertaining their condition in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

4.5Electrical and electronic components are protected, so that their condition does not deteriorate during storage, in accordance with company requirements.

4.6Electrical and electronic components are labelled in accordance with company requirements and stored in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

4.7Storage records are updated in accordance with company requirements.
