Notes for Facilitators/Managers
Resource Aim:
To increase an awareness of End of life care.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the workshop, learners will be able to:
- Explain what palliative care and End of Life means
- Describe the key principles of palliative and end of life care
- Discuss applying an end of life care approach to patients with advanced and progressive illness
Target Audiences:
All health and social care staff who frequently deal with End of Life Care
New staff – a useful induction tool
Volunteers
Existing staff needing an update or refresher in End of Life Care
Time required – 3hrs
Learning methods/Delivery style:
Workshop
Equipment:
Flipchart/whiteboard +/- power point, handouts and evaluation forms.
Optional learning methods:
- Could be converted to an e learning session (It is recommended that any End of Life Care e learning is linked to the national e learning sessions as commissioned by the dept. of health.
- Could be used as a workbook.
Trainers/facilitators:
End of life awareness training can be provided by those who are confident in the subject with sufficient relevant knowledge and experience.
Trainers/facilitators may need to attend a ‘train the trainer’ session to update knowledge and skills.
Some organisations may wish to appoint End of Life Care Champions who after attending a train the trainers programme, could then cascade information and be involved in training others back in the workplace.
Venue:
Venue to accommodate 20 learners and 1-2 facilitators. Room for group work is essential.
