The Manchester Men’s Room (TMR) is an arts and social care charity supporting young men engaged in or at risk of involvement in sex work, homeless or otherwise vulnerable in Manchester. For the last 13 years we have creatively engaged and supported marginalised and chaotic young men.We place socially engaged participatory arts practice at the core of our work. The centrality of the arts to our engagement allows us to develop trust and establish positive and productive relationships with young men living extremely chaotic, marginalised and often harmful lives.

We have recently been fortunate to secure funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to strengthen and develop ourparticipatory arts programme. The Head of Creative Provision will be based in our office in central Manchester. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop and expand our existing provision ensuring our award winning and innovative approach continues to reach, engage, support and empower vulnerable young men across Manchester.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Head of Creative Provision will lead on creative development and delivery at the Men’s Room, delivering our socially engaged participatory arts programme. This role will develop and enhanceour programme to ensure we are reaching and effectively engaging young male sex workers, homeless young men and other vulnerable young men across the city. Working with key partners from across the arts, voluntary and statutory sectors the post holder will enable the men we work with to access services and opportunities that enhance their personal development and improve their well-being.

The Head of Creative Provision will lead on the strategic development and operational implementation of our socially engaged participatory arts approach, supporting and empowering young men with complex needs. The post holder will build on anartistic approach that develops positive engagement through the arts; fostering social, personal and emotional development for men accessing the service and develop new links and opportunities for engagement across the city and beyond.

The post holder will be responsible for the management and supervision of staff, volunteers and free-lance artists as appropriate.This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Post Holder

  • To lead on the development and implementation of the organisation’s artistic vision, artistic policy and strategic approach to the our creative programme
  • To lead on the development of innovative socially engaged participatory arts approaches to engaging young men complex needs (with a focus on young male sex workers and young men at risk of sexual exploitation). To successfully engage these young men in creative projects that respond to their needs and contribute to empowerment approaches
  • To take a lead role in strategic partnership development across the arts sector in Greater Manchester and beyond
  • To manage budgets relating to artistic activity
  • In conjunction with the Director, maintain a strategic approach to The Men’s Room creative approach and development.
  • To identify, contract and support all freelance artistic staff and arts agencies providing supervision as required
  • To manage all freelance creative staff, ensuring suitability for The Men’s Room client group and monitoring their contractual time with regular supervision
  • To support the Volunteer Coordinator in the recruitment, management and development of volunteers
  • To identify and provide opportunities for participants to develop their skills outside of the core programme
  • Support and advise the Director on potential funding streams and applications in the arts sector
  • To assist the Director in researching, completion and submission of funding bids and identifying potential business development and income diversification opportunities
  • Take a lead role in the planning and delivery of performances and exhibitions
  • Take responsibility for ensuring all data concerning creative activity and product is recorded and maintained in accordance with data protection legislation and organisational procedures and policy.
  • To produce statistical, quantitative and qualitative data as requested by the Director
  • To ensure compliance with Safeguarding procedures policies and practice
  • To represent The Men’s Room at external meetings / conferences as and when required

PERSON SPECIFICATION - ESSENTIAL

  • Minimum 5 years experience of working in an applied participatory arts setting
  • Minimum 5 years experience of working with young people or people with complex needs
  • Minimum 5 years experience of managing projects and artists in participatory arts settings
  • Minimum 5 Experience of managing new and emerging artists and arts volunteers
  • Experience of working collaboratively across arts based and non-arts sectors
  • Experience of programming arts activity for young people or people with complex needs
  • Proven skills and successful track record in both fundraising, business development and income diversification
  • Knowledge, understanding, experience and commitment to person-centred, holistic, assets-based approaches to empowering marginalised and vulnerable people
  • Extensive experience of working collaboratively with the voluntary sector
  • Ability to communicate at all levels and an ability to write and present reports
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults procedures

PERSON SPECIFICATION - DESIRABLE

  • Experience of working in a social care setting
  • Knowledge and experience of working around issues of sexual exploitation and/or sex work
  • Art form practitioner experience
  • Senior management experience in an arts or voluntary sector setting
  • Experience of developing co-produced creative projects responding to young men’s issues
