K-12 OUTREACH EDUCATOR

PURPOSE:

TheK-12 Outreach Educator position is utilized in Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Muscatine County Extension, to extend and support the 4-H Youth Development Program. TheK-12 Outreach Educator will assist with the conduct of the 4-H program in Muscatine County extending opportunities to impact a growing audienceoperating under the direct supervision of the Regional Youth Program Specialist and ultimate supervision of the Muscatine County Extension Council.

OUTREACH

  1. 4-H Afterschool Outreach - Coordinate and deliver programming during times children and youth are not in school, including before- and after-school hours, teacher workdays, school holidays, summer months, weekends. Includes sustainability and growth of Clover Kids programs, Summer Lunch Programming and “College for Kids”.
  1. Utilize 4-H and Extension approved curricula
  2. Target audience includes children and youth from kindergarten to twelfth grades
  3. Design program to engage children and youth in experiential, inquiry based learning
  4. Give priority to programming topics: Healthy living, STEM, Citizenship and Leadership, and Communication and the Arts
  5. Develop and manage syllabus, publicity, staffing, and other tasks as required for the specific program
  6. Deliver programming independently and/or in collaboration with staff or others
  7. Follow up with participants’ families to encourage continued engagement
  1. Camps Outreach - Coordinate and deliverday or overnight camp programming
  1. Utilize 4-H and Extension approved curricula (Environment, Outdoor Recreation, Wildlife)
  2. Target audience includes children and youth from kindergarten to twelfth grades
  3. Design program to engage children and youth in experiential, inquiry based learning
  4. Develop and manage syllabus, publicity, staffing, and other tasks as required for the specific program
  5. Follow up with participants’ families to encourage continued engagement
  1. Events Outreach - Coordinate and deliver community outreach events with the goals of:
  1. Raising awareness of and interest in youth participation in the 4-H Youth Development Program
  2. Raising awareness of and interest in adult volunteering opportunities in the 4-H Youth Development Program
  3. Give priority to programming topics: Healthy living, STEM, Citizenship and Leadership, and Communication and the Arts
  1. Schools Outreach - Coordinate with the Muscatine Community School District to deliver enrichment classes for traditional students and area homeschooled students.
  1. Utilizing 4-H and Extension approved curricula
  2. Designed to engage children and youth in experiential, inquiry based learning
  3. Priority topics for programming include: Healthy living, STEM, Citizenship and Leadership, and Communication and the Arts

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT and DEVELOPMENT

  1. Volunteer Management
  1. Recruit youth and volunteers for the promotion and implementation of K-12 Outreach Activities
  2. Provide support to volunteers utilizing the ISOTURE (Identify, Select, Orient, Train, Utilize, Recognize and Evaluate) model
  3. Work in partnership with County Youth Coordinator to ensure proper screening, training and recording of volunteer data
  1. Revenue Generation
  1. Develop proposals to deliver K-12 activities that generate revenue for supplies, staff time and mileage (if appropriate)
  2. Work with Office Administrator in creation of invoices and collection of funds
  3. Work in partnership with Regional Youth Program Specialist in development and administration of grants
  1. Collect respective data on participant demographics and impact
  2. Become familiar with 4hOnline to be able to access information and generate reports.

EXPECTATIONS

  1. Use of good interpersonal skills to solve problems and work with the public
  2. Follow all policies of the county as stated in county handbook
  3. Assist and participate in other Extension activities as appropriate including some support activities during the Muscatine County Fair.
  4. Participate in professional development opportunities
  5. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the Regional Extension Education director, Extension Council, County Extension Office Staff as well as Program Specialists serving designated Extension areas
  6. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other groups and organizations, public and private, which cooperate with and are affected by 4-H and youth programs in the assigned geographic area

SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred – Education related field preferred or equivalent experience
  2. 1-2 years previous experience working with youth and volunteers
  3. Knowledge of or interest in 4-H
  4. Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  5. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain records
  6. Computer literate
  7. Valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle with proof of vehicle liability coverage

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

20 hours per week/Flexible, occasional nights and weekends (1040 hours per year).

In accordance with ISU Extension Child Protection and Safety Policy, hire is contingent on successful completion of required background checks.

Compensation determined annually by Extension Council ($13.00 - $17.00/hr dependent on education/experience).

Directly responsible to the Regional Youth Program Specialist with ultimate accountability to the Muscatine County Extension Council.
