Artist Deb Strain To Discuss Fabric Design

Have you ever wondered how fabric companies get all their great designs? If so, this month’s meeting is for you.

Our speaker is Deb Strain, a fabric designer for Moda Fabrics, whose hometown and current residence is Yellow Springs. Deb has been a fabric designer for Moda since 1996, one of Moda’s three longest affiliated designers. She will be speaking to us about her design techniques for fabric. Deb has created over 100 collections, and if you would like to see some of her fabric, go to modafabrics.com, click on Designers, and select Deb Strain from the drop-down menu. Come to the meeting to learn about this fascinating, creative process.

Deb designs not only fabric but also note cards, calendars, garden flags, adult coloring books, and more.

Deb will bring Moda fabric fat quarters and bundles, Moda panels, and other items she has designed to sell. Be ready to add to your depleting stash of fabric and pre-cuts or perhaps get a little Christmas shopping done. Bring a friend who may attend the lecture for only $5.

If you have made a quilt, then you will surely be interested in the November speakers. The November meeting will feature quilt appraisers Dee Dadik and Molly Butlers. Plan on attending the November meeting to learn more about the appraisal process.

The December meeting will feature our carry-in pot-luck dinner and a quilt square drawing.

A Note from the President…

September’s meeting was a good one, I thought, and a big “Thank You” to Lois McFarland for her sharing over 40 Hospice quilts along with the story she shared with us.

The Autumn season is upon us with cooler weather and soon the frost will be on the pumpkin. In the meantime, we continue to sew and quilt in various quilt gatherings, some in homes, some at the Senior Center on Mondays, and some have gathered at the Little House of Stitches for some QOV sewing time, and most of us in our homes. But we keep sewing and quilting because it is what we LOVE to do.

Please keep bringing those Show ‘n’ Tell projects to share. Till next time.

QOV Will Collect Block Donations in November

Our 5th Annual QOV Block Drive will be at our November guild meeting! We encourage everyone to make at least one patriotic quilt block to donate, but make as many as you like! For every block that you bring to theNovembermeeting (don't bring them to the October one!), you will get a chance to win a gift card to an area quilt store! Blocks need to be 12-1/2 inches UNFINISHED and made out of red, white, blue, gold, and/or cream fabrics.

The QOV Scrap Box will be at the October meeting - take what you might use - bring back the extra at the next meeting! There are endless block patterns on the Internet - some favorites are www.quiltercache.comandwww.maryquilts.com. These blocks will be turned into beautiful sampler quilts that will honor a veteran.

We have also scheduled monthly QOV Sew-Ins at The Little Shop of Stitches in Miamisburg. The dates are Monday, October 17 and Thursday, November 17. I apologize to those who go to the Monday sew-in at the Senior Center - I wasn't thinking when I signed up at LSOS for a Monday - just saw the open date and grabbed it! But if you are planning to come to the October or November QOV Sew-In, please sign up at the back table. It helps to know how many projects are needed and how close we are to capacity. Once again we had 17 ladies who participated last month! We get a lot accomplished with so many hands working together!

I will not be at the October meeting, but Deanna Lasher and Diana Frye will be manning the QOV table. If you need to pick up or drop off a quilt or fabric, they will take care of you! We are still in need of machine quilters - I have about 7 tops that are ready for quilting. If you can help out with one, please contact me!

During 2017, we would love to award Quilts of Valor to our guild members who have served in our military and have been "touched by war". Remember that this definition encompasses many views - one doesn't have to serve on the front line to be "touched by war". We know of several of our guild members who we would love to honor. Please e-mail me if you are a guild member and have served, or if you know of a guild member who is too humble to submit their name. The phrase we hear the most is "There were so many others who deserve this more than me." But we disagree and our goal is to cover ALL of those who have sacrificed in whatever way for our country!

Are you looking for a good scrap busting quilt pattern? You are sure to find one in “The Big Book of Nickel Quilts” by Pat Speth, a new pattern book that uses charm packs or five inch squares from your scrap stash.

You are sure to find a terrific scrappy pattern in “The Big Book of Scrappy Quilts” by The Patchwork Place. This new book contains 77 scrappy patterns to make fabulous quilts from crib to king size.

How about a little appliqué to use up those scraps? “App 2 Appliqué” by Diane Hire contains some terrific florals and modern abstract designs that would perk up any mood. Check out these new books and more at the library table at our August meeting.

Donations Needed for Raffle Quilt

The pattern chosen for the next MVQG show raffle quilt is a Dresden plate in spring colors. If you are willing to donate fabric for the quilt, we are looking for 2.5 inch strips at least 5.5 inches long in medium to dark pinks, yellows, oranges, blues, greens and lavenders. Solids or very small prints will work.

Since it is difficult to return donated fabrics which are not used, please be aware the unused fabrics will be given to the quilt show fabric bags that sell for $5.

Please bring any donations to the October guild meeting. Judy Gebhart will have a bin to collect the fabric.

Thank you for any help.
