2018-2019 BCHS Eurhythmics Syllabus
Color Guard, also known as the “sport of the arts”, is a performance organization that allows students to perform for large audiences, learn new skills, acquire leadership skills, improve physical ability and wellness, and join a family!
Color Guard is a co-curricular activity. There is a eurhythmics class that your child must be enrolled in to be a part of the ensemble. It is very important that your student is both on the team and in the class, because much of learning and perfecting skills and show work happen during class time. That also means that their time at practices will be a part of their class participation grade. Students will be removed from the group if they fail to attend classes and/or after school practices.
ALL INCOMING MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO BE ENROLLED IN THE CLASS, NO EXCEPTIONS.
The Color Guard participates in two seasons: Marching Season and Winterguard.
Marching Season
The Color Guard are a visual representation of the marching band show. Marching season is practiced and performed outdoors, at Friday night football games and Saturday competitions. (See calendar) Your child will learn to dance and spin flags, rifles, and sabres to aid in the music of the show, and then get to perform for you!
Winterguard
Winterguard begins as soon as Marching Season ends (approximately late November). Winterguard is performed inside a gymnasium, on a tarp, with only the guard members performing (no band). The students will be required to perform a solo and FBA Solo and Ensemble. They will also be performing in small groups throughout the spring.
IF YOUR CHILD JOINS THIS ACTIVITY, THEY ARE REQUIRED TO DO BOTH MARCHING SEASON AND WINTERGUARD.
Fair Share Obligations and Calendar
Each member will have dues that pay for competitions, equipment, uniforms, etc. It is understandable that every household has different situations, and those can be worked with, as long as you or your child communicates the situation with Mr. Sipiora. The below payment is a school obligation tied to the class. ALL PAYMENTS ARE NONREFUNDABLE
Total paid per member$200
***Checks should be made out to Boca Ciega High School***
Fundraisers will be held to help offset costs as long as students and parents are willing to participate and help with these fundraisers.
Attendance requirements for 2017-2018
***YOUR CHILD IS REQUIRED TO BE AT EVERY REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE. IF THERE ARE DATES IN WHICH THE STUDENT WILL NOT BE IN ATTENDANCE, MR. Sipiora MUST BE INFORMED AT LEASTTWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE***
Acceptable excuses for absences:
- Family emergencies
- Funerals
- Illness that require absence from school/doctor visits (doctor note required)
***If a student has an unexcused absence from school on the day of a rehearsal or performance they are not to participate in that rehearsal or performance***
Class Grading
Along with the attendance requirement for rehearsals and performances 40%, students will also be awarded a weekly participation grade which takes into account being prepared for class and showing up to class on time. There will also be tests on skill mastery 45% and students must have a section in their schoolwide binder for this class that will be worth 15% of their quarter grade. In this binder students will keep handouts and any written work done in class.
Rules and Behavior
All color guard members are required to adhere to the rules of the Boca Ciega Band Handbook and the BCHS code of conduct. Any violations of these rules may result in consequences being administered. Major or repeated small violations will result in removal from the color guard program including eurhythmics class.
Academic Requirements
Students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA to be a part of the color guard program. You may be removed or put on probation with the group if your GPA falls below this line. Our biggest concern is that you graduate from high school.
