AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF JOHN L. “RABBIT” SCOTT, SR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY, TO HONOR HIS REMARKABLE COMMITMENT TO HIS COMMUNITY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of John L. “Rabbit” Scott, Sr., at the age of eightysix on April 22, 2017; and

Whereas, born in Lugoff on November 7, 1930, he was the oldest of three siblings born to the late William Grant and Mabel Etheridge and was educated in the public schools of Kershaw County; and

Whereas, Mr. Scott moved to Columbia as a teenager and spent his adult life there as an entrepreneur, a wellknown and highly regarded owner of a convenience store that sold dry goods; and

Whereas, he became president of J. L. Scott Realty, Inc., where he bought and sold real estate throughout the State for more than four decades, spendinga great deal of time in the redevelopment of the Harlem Heights Community; and

Whereas, a respected voice in the political community, Mr. Scott helped to elect many members of his community to public office, including his own son; and

Whereas, his favorite pastimes and leisure pursuits included visiting relatives and friends, and especially fishing and playing cards; and

Whereas, Mr. Scott was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Gracie White Scott, and he reared thirteen outstanding children: the late Arietta Jenkins; Alma Berry; Dr. Mable Scott;the Honorable John Scott, Jr.; Stanley Scott, Sr.;Vertell Jackson; Linda Marshall; Michael Smith; Marcella Wright; Tyrone Gibbs; Symone Scott; Carl Scott; and Corrie Carraway; and

Whereas, his children blessed him with a treasured heritage in the affection of twentysix grandchildren, fortysix greatgrandchildren, and eight greatgreatgrandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Rabbit Scott and for the example of hard work and kindness he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

Thatthe members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of John L. “Rabbit” Scott, Sr., of Richland County, honor his remarkable commitment to his community, and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John L. “Rabbit” Scott, Sr.
