A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE REVEREND EDWARD A. MCCLAIN, JR., OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, FOR HIS LIFETIME COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO COMMUNITY SERVICE.

Whereas, the Reverend Edward A. McClain, Jr. has sown numerous seeds through his lifetime as a pastor, educator, community activist, mentor, friend, and father; and

Whereas, he has served as senior pastor of Calvary African Methodist Episcopal Church for twenty-five years and is a radio announcer for the Citadel Communication Broadcasting Company; and

Whereas, the Reverend McClain is a native of Awendaw, South Carolina, and was educated in the Charleston County Public Schools; and

Whereas, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the District of Columbia Teachers College in Washington, D.C.; a Master of Arts in Education from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.; and an EDS from the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina; and

Whereas, the Rev. McClain’s work experiences in education span thirtyfour years; and

Whereas, he was a teacher and assistant principal of McFarland Junior High School in Washington, D.C.; assistant principal of Roper Junior High School in Washington, D.C.; assistant principal of Wallace Middle School in Charleston, South Carolina; principal of Edith L. Frierson Elementary School on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina; and retired as principal of Norman C. Toole Middle School; and

Whereas, the Rev. McClain has been recognized as Parent of the Year sponsored by The American Family Coalition and The Washington Times Foundation of Washington, D.C. and is the father of threetime Olympian and South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Katrina McClain; and

Whereas, the Rev. McClain’s lifetime commitment to public service is a reflection of his belief that social progress, order, security, and peace are embodied in public service; and

Whereas, he was recognized with the Senate Award for thirtyfive years of dedicated service in the area of politics and community services and his vital role in improving the living condition of people he has touched; and

Whereas, Pastor McClain’s service includes: four years on the first Charleston County Users Fee Board; a second term as a member of the Charleston County Aviation Authority Board; the Charleston County School District Ten School Board; a former chairman of the A.M.E. Ministers Alliance of Charleston and the Low Country for five years, as well as, founder and current chairman of the TriCounty Interdenominational Ministers Alliance; the current chairman of the Union Heights Community Council Executive Board and executive director of the Union Heights Outreach Ministries; and many other areas of contribution to society; and

Whereas, the Rev. McClain is also a life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, a former member of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons, a member of the NAACP, and a member of Phi Delta Kappa; and

Whereas, he is married to the former Sallie S. White, proud father of nine children, grandfather of twentyfive grandchildren, and greatgrandfather of six great grandchildren. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly recognize and honor the Reverend Edward A. McClain, Jr., of Charleston County, for his lifetime commitment and dedication to community service.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Edward A. McClain, Jr.
