A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE MEMBERS OF THE DREHER HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM AND THE TEAM’S COACHES, CHRISTINA MURPHY AND LINDA WILLIAMS, OF COLUMBIA ON WINNING THE 2003 ACADEMIC DECATHLON STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE, TO COMMEND THEM FOR THEIR HARD WORK AND COMPETITIVE SPIRIT, AND TO WISH THEM EVERY SUCCESS IN THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, on Friday, March 14, 2003, the Dreher High School Academic Decathlon Team of Columbia competed in ten academic events under the direction of the University of South Carolina Honors College and emerged as the winners of the 2003 Academic Decathlon State Championship Title; and
Whereas, the welltrained and ableminded team members were tested in language, literature, economics, science, mathematics, art, music, speech, interviewing, and essaywriting in which they were asked thoughtprovoking questions about a common theme; and
Whereas, it is the goal of this event to promote cooperation among students while engaging them in rigorous competition and helping them to become more informed and better prepared for future challenges; and
Whereas, the 2003 edition of the Dreher High School Academic Decathlon Team was led by Coaches Christina Murphy and Linda Williams who aided the team in understanding their material and instilled in the students a desire to win; and
Whereas, the members of this team were willing to sacrifice many hours to learn this extracurricular information to bring a championship title to Dreher High School; and
Whereas, this team of twenty young people now have the opportunity to travel to Erie, Pennsylvania, for the national competition being held April 23 through April 26; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud of the accomplishments of this team and are pleased to find such academic excellence being promoted in South Carolina’s public schools. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the members of the Dreher High School Academic Decathlon Team and the team’s coaches, Christina Murphy and Linda Williams, of Columbia on winning the 2003 Academic Decathlon State Championship Title, to commend them for their hard work and competitive spirit, and to wish them every success in their future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Dreher High School Academic Decathlon Team and Coaches Christina Murphy and Linda Williams of Columbia.
