THE SWEETEST PLACE ON EARTH

by Eddie Lawrence, D.Min

INTRO:A preacher heard a famous preacher start a sermon, "Some of the best days of my life where spent in the arms of another woman!" The crowd hung in suspense. Finally he continued, "The arms of my mother." The crowd was relieved.
The listening preacher thought, that was a powerful introduction. Deciding to try it himself the next Sunday with his own congregation, he began, "People I want you to know something. Some of the best days of my life were spent in the arms of another woman." The congregation gasped. Everyone stared toward the Pastor’s wife. Seeing this, he was shaken a bit. Trying to remember what to say next, he finally blurted, "But for the life of me, I can’t remember who she was!"

In the arms of our mother is one of the sweetest places on earth. The great thing about this is that a Mother always wants to be close by to hold her children, especially when they are hurting. Think of Jesus in his greatest moment of pain…where was his mother. At the foot of the cross, doubtless with her arms yearning to hold him.

TEXT:John 19:25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.26When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!”27Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.(NKJV)

TRANSITION:Yes, in the arms of our mother is one of the sweetest places on earth.

Why? Because:

1. IT WAS ORDAINED OF GOD

God created woman as a "man with a womb." Your mother was created by God to equip and nurture you. God gave her what you would need to survive.

Remember all that God showed Mary about her child! It was all God’s plan. He has a plan for you too.

2. SHE HOLDS YOU BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO.

Illus – Most Wanted! The FBI keeps a “most wanted” list of the people they really want to catch. Now their motive is justice not love. But Mother wants us and her motive is love.

There is a yearning deep in the human heart to be desired by someone else. It is very powerful and compelling. When a person fills that need in a heart, it is easy to love. We enjoy being accepted and wanted.

Illus- Studies in the last century proved that babies left unattended in an orphanage would die from lack of human touch. We were created to respond to touch. A mother’s touch forms the foundation of so much of our emotional foundation. Unwanted children suffer. What a sweet place it is to be in the arms of a loving mother wanting life’s best for her child.

Don’t you know Mary wanted to hold Jesus. It was afterward, when his body had ceased breathing, that she was able to hold him.

3. YOU ARE AN EXTENSION OF HER LIFE.

In mother’s arms you represent the proof of the miracle of life. She carried you, she bore you, and she spends her life maturing you to release you to life. From there you will repeat the process with your own offspring. It is the way of God and the way of life.

The Bible says that God was thinking of you and the womb He created you in.

Psalm 139:
13For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
14I will praise You, for I am fearfullyandwonderfully made;[a]
Marvelous are Your works,
Andthatmy soul knows very well.

4. SHE SEES IN YOU WHAT NO ONE ELSE DOES.

Like a painter who may confuse others while he is painting a canvas. Onlookers gawk and gaze trying to figure out what he is painting. What will it be? Yet, the painter sees it fully – in his mind.

It is something that is created within him first and placed before men later. It is the same with a mother. She sees in her child what others cannot see. The child proceeded from her. The child was created within her.

She always sees the best, the possibilities, the potential. That is why our mothers are our biggest cheerleaders.

They believe deep inside that we are winners.

In our failure they still see our potential, just like God did when he spoke over Adam and Eve in the Garden concerning their future redemption through a child of their own.

Mary pondered in her heart all the things she had seen. She came to Jesus at a wedding. He turned water into wine. She knew what was in him.

5. YOU ONCE AGAIN HEAR THE FIRST SOUND YOU EVER HEARD–HER HEARTBEAT.

Psalm 22:
8“He trusted[a]in theLord, let Him rescue Him;
Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!”

9But YouareHe who took Me out of the womb;
You made Me trustwhileon My mother’s breasts.
10I was cast upon You from birth.
From My mother’s womb
Youhave beenMy God.

In our mother’s arms is a sweet place because we hear the heart we first heart when our own heart started beating.

Jesus looked down from the cross and told John, behold your mother. He wanted his Mom to have someone to hold and wanted John to hear the tender heartbeat of his Mom.

All through our lives, at times when our own hearts are broken, just leaning into mother’s arms, our hearts are revived as they sync with her heart. The heart so full of love , grace, mercy for us and believe in us.

CONCLUSION: So let me encourage each of us to give your mom a hug today.

If you are unable to visit her because of where she lives, give her a call and tell her you love her.

If she has passed on, then thank the Lord for her and her influence on your life.

And, if there be someone here whose relationship with your mother is not a loving one, then forgive and let it go, and be a giver of love to the people in your life, and still thank God for the woman whom He used to bring you into this world.

We all have cause to thank God for our mother.

THE DAY GOD MADE A MAMA
by Eddie Lawrence, D.Min.

(Based on Genesis 2:21-3:15)

TEXT:Genesis 2:21And theLordGod caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.22Then the rib which theLordGod had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23And Adam said:

“Thisisnow bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

24Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Genesis 3:3Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which theLordGod had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

2And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;3but of the fruit of the tree whichisin the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

4Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.5For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6So when the woman saw that the treewasgood for food, that itwaspleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to makeonewise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that theywerenaked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

8And they heard the sound of theLordGod walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of theLordGod among the trees of the garden.

9Then theLordGod called to Adam and said to him, “Whereareyou?”

10So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

11And He said, “Who told you that youwerenaked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12Then the man said, “The woman whom You gaveto bewith me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13And theLordGod said to the woman, “Whatisthis you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14So theLordGod said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this,
Youarecursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
15And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

TRANSITION:Let us notice the following four observations of what the first woman possessed:

1. THE FIRST MAMA HAD DOMINION

If you hang around the kitchen you’ll see she’s still got it.

Seriously, if you want to see the dominion a woman carries–threaten her child! She will rise up and ready herself to take you out.

The instant willingness to die for another shows up the moment a mother’s sees her child in danger.

We often leave out the fact that both man and woman were given dominion in the garden of Eden. Acts 3:20-21 tells us that God is in the business of restoring all things and that would include bringing women back into their place of dominion along side of man as under regents in the earth. Every child knows that Mama has some dominion in her.

2. THE FIRST MAMA HAD A ONE ON ONE WITH GOD

Have you ever thought about the fact that in Genesis two, where we are told God created woman out of the rib from Adam’s side, that it says "God brought her to Adam." Before she met Adam, she had first met God.

A woman is not relegated to have a relationship with a man before she can rightly relate to God. Eve as Adam, had a relationship with God before she met her man.

If you think about it, woman was the last creative act of God in the six days of His creative activity. She crowned his work and He said it was very good.

JOKE: Of course there is that one wiseguy who said, God said man was not complete without a woman, so he made one and finished him off!

But the truth is, none of us would be here without a mother. She was chosen to be the vessel we arrived here in. God formed us in our mother’s womb. Awesome. God definitely works through mothers.

3. THE FIRST MAMA MADE A MISTAKE

None of our Mother’s are perfect.

When we think of our Moms, we should not isolate our thoughts to that day she got mad and took our toys away.

We must remember the millions of things she did to make sure we survived. For those of you who have a bad relationship and bad memories of your mother, let God give you the grace today to forgive, to let go, and to bless, so that you can be the person you need to be. Don’t pass it on!

4. THE FIRST MAMA WAS GIVEN A PROMISE FOR HER SEED

God told the serpent that the woman would have a seed that would crush its head. With her head hanging in failure, Eve heard a word from God that He would use her to topple Satan’s empire.

Mothers, stand on this word for your kids! Many a wondering child has found God because of the prayers of a knee bent mother who refused to allow the enemy to have her child.

Kids, recognize the authority your mother has in heaven because of the purposes of God for your life.

(SELECTED INFO FOR THE PULPIT)

TOP FIVE SENTIMENTS MOTHER’S WANT TO HEAR

(FROM AMERICAN GREETINGS CARD COMPANY)

Let’s count down from five:

#5 Mother's Day Sentiment

The "little things" count... Spend some time thinking about the special things your mom has done that meant so much---always remembering your likes and dislikes, making sure you've got a sweater in case it gets cold and even keeping track of your belongings (especially your cell phone and car keys!) with a GPS-like accuracy.

#4 Mother's Day Sentiment

Walks down memory lane... Reminding mom of a special day spent together, the best advice she ever gave you, or the time she cut you some slack when you were having a hard time goes a long way in reinforcing the appreciation and love you are trying to express on Mother's Day. It always feels good to know that the time a parent invests in their child has made a positive impression on them.

#3 Mother's Day Sentiment

You listened! Whether she dropped a million hints or came right out and said that she'd just like to spend Mother's Day together, just knowing that you listened and took her request to heart means the world. At the same time, don't go overboard and try to make her plan her own day. Take her lead and snag those reservations or prepare her favorite meal---and do the dishes afterwards!

#2 Mother's Day Sentiment

Thank you... Of course your appreciation for mom runs deep, but taking the time to actually say thank you makes all of the sleepless nights (both when you were a baby and when she's up worrying nowadays) well worth it. Write it on your Mother's Day card to her and don't forget to say it to her throughout the day.

#1 Mother's Day Sentiment

I love you... It's the first sentence a parent practically pines to hear their child say, so shout it loud and proud on Mother's Day! It doesn't have to be effusive, grandiose, or in any way that feels out of character for you---those three simple words whether said, written, or expressed through your actions mean so much!

WHAT MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME!

My mother taught me LOGIC:
"If you fall off that swing and break your neck, you can't go to the store with me."
My mother taught me MEDICINE:
"If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they're going to freeze that way."
My mother taught me TO THINK AHEAD:
"If you don't pass your spelling test, you'll never get a good job!"
My mother taught me ESP:
"Put your sweater on; don't you think that I know when you're cold?"
My mother taught me TO MEET A CHALLENGE:
"What were you thinking? Answer me when I talk to you...Don't talk back to me!"
My mother taught me HUMOR:
"When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me."
My mother taught me how to BECOME AN ADULT:
"If you don't eat your vegetables, you'll never grow up.
My mother taught me ABOUT MARRIAGE:
"How do you think you got here?"
My mother taught me about GENETICS:
"You are just like your father!"
My mother taught me about my ROOTS:
"Do you think you were born in a barn?"
My mother taught me about the WISDOM of AGE:
"When you get to be my age, you will understand."
My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION:
"Just wait until your father gets home."
My mother taught me about RECEIVING:
"You are going to get it when we get home."
And my all time favorite thing, JUSTICE:
"One day you will have kids, and I hope they turn out just like YOU... then you'll see what it's like."
