Tuesday, February 12th (Day 1)

Cathy Macarthur, BComm, CA – BC Investment Management Corporation

Presentation: Canada’s Move to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)

Cathy MacArthur has 20 years experience in accounting, tax, and auditing which she gained while working with an international CA firm, a mid-size CA firm, and as a sole practitioner. She has also assisted many public sector clients in the Financial Audit area while employed with the Office of the Auditor General of British Columbia. She is currently a Senior Manager of Investment Accounting at British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, a crown corporation that manages approximately $83 billion of investments for the public sector. In her role as Senior Manager, she is responsible for strategic initiatives, accounting system changes, process development, internal controls and financial reporting. Cathy holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the UBC, a Chartered Accountancy designation and the CICA In-depth Tax specialization.

Cathy’s presentation will provide a general overview of Canada’s transition to IFRS. Her presentation will include lessons that can be learned from the European and Australian experience and standard setting developments in other countries that might impact IFRS prior to Canada’s adoption. More importantly, it will provide an overview of how stakeholders inside and outside of your organization might be impacted by Canada’s move to IFRS. Although the full transition to IFRS isn’t scheduled to take place until 2011, there are many important deadlines and considerable planning that needs to take place prior to the actual implementation date.

Presentation: From Neutral to High Gear - Influence the Audience with Engaging Presence and Memorable Visuals

Dan’s areas of passion and expertise include facilitating, appreciative inquiry and the use of technology to support communication and learning. Dan teaches a variety of theory-based skills courses and workshops including business communication (technical writing), public speaking, presentations, curriculum design, training, facilitation and multimedia. He facilitates appreciative inquiry for change management organizational planning. Dan’s approach encourages participants to have fun in their learning by using peer collaboration, improvisation and a variety of strategies and media to create an active, engaging and respectful learning environment.

Dan managed the audio-visual department and served as an internal consultant (technologist) at Camosun College in British Columbia from 1986 to 2004. He wrote the EdTech Toolkit in 1994 as a guide to new technologies that support learning. Dan started two campus-based Toastmasters public speaking clubs and is a volunteer convener for Wise Democracy Victoria's Wisdom Council process.

Presentation: Establishing and Maintaining Client Loyalty

Angela Greene’s formal education and career experience has revolved around marketing and human resource management. She has an in-depth understanding of how client perceptions impact loyalty, marketing return on investment, and subsequent profitability. Heading Elevate Victoria, her focus is on sharing strategies with business leaders and their teams on how to elevate client retention. The focus of her work involves education on how to turn more customers into clients.

Angela’s workshops are interactive and involve various aspects of establishing and maintaining client loyalty. Of primary importance is authentic client connections, using humour to enhance the client experience and dealing with challenging client interactions and situations. This workshop will focus on aspects of creating better client experiences and solidifying long-term client loyalty. Learn how many chances a client gives before switching suppliers. Look at how non-verbal communication affects the client's impression formation and the impacts of client perception on loyalty. Discuss difficult and unhappy clients and how to interact with them in a way that maintains loyalty. Angela will wrap up with tips on how to use timely and appropriate humour to enhance the client experience.

Mark E.S. Bernard– Security & Privacy Officer, Credit Union Central of BC

Presentation: The Business Benefits of Implementing a Compliance Framework

Mark Bernard brings 18 years of experience in Information Security, Privacy and Compliance within a broad range of industries in the private and public sectors. Mark holds a variety of professional designations, including Certified Information Security Manager, Certified Information Systems Auditor, and Certified Information Systems Security Professional. Mark volunteers his time writing articles, teaching and educating, as well as with the local Information Systems Audit and Control Association chapter and the High Technology Crime Investigation Association Chapter. Currently, Mark is a Security and Privacy Officer with Credit Union Central of BC, where he is leading Credit Union Central’s initiative to become the first online banking system to earn the ISO/IEC 27001 Certification. Previous to this, Mark was a Privacy, Security and Compliance Officer with the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue.

Presentation (Part I): Volunteering – Why and How to Get Involved

For more than 25 years, Ann Moskow has trained and worked with public and private sector executives, senior managers, officers and staff internationally and across Canada in governance, operations and project management, communications, and policy development. Her extensive consulting and hands-on experience has given Ann an understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing boards and managers.

She was a lecturer at the federal government Knowledge Institute and at the University of Victoria in the areas of project management, communications, and change management. She has also lectured in her areas of expertise at the University of Ottawa and at Camosun College. Ann is involved in her community having served on the Board of Governors for Camosun College, and boards of directors for the Rotary Club of Victoria-Harbourside, Literacy Victoria and Clothes for Kids. She is currently Vice-President of the Rotary Club of Victoria-Harbourside Foundation. Ann specializes in the areas of board and operational governance, strategic management, risk management, and change management. A foundation for all of these is Ann’s extensive experience on boards, and in operations and project management.

Maureen Duncan is a results-oriented senior professional with over 35 years’ of progressive experience in the Private and the Not-for-Profit Sector. Her career spans finance and administration from BC to Britain. Her solid planning and organizational skills and ability to deliver results make her a sought after resource in many areas of the Not-for-Profit sector. Maureen has an established network of contacts within the community, with memberships in the Harbourside Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. Her volunteer affiliations are extensive and include Chair or Co-Chair roles with organizations such as Interlock Employee and Family Assistance Corporation of Canada, the UVic Office of Community Based Research Steering Committee, and Major’s Task Force GAP Analysis Committee. Her enthusiasm and ongoing commitment to capacity building provides a solid foundation for effective participation in growth and community development.

In Part I, Maureen and Ann will inform the audience about serving on a board, what kinds of organizations have boards, how to choose the right board, how to get onto the board of your choice, volunteer opportunities in Victoria, elected and appointed board members, and when and how to end your involvement.

In Part II, board governance topics will be covered such as what does good board governance look like, why a board's governance matters to you when you are making 'grants or contributions' to that organization, governing documents (eg. Charters), effective monitoring and control, and what to do when the board is dysfunctional.

Gordon Gunn, BA, CA, CISA, CMC – Associate Partner, KPMG Risk & Advisory Services

Presentation: Serving on a Board – The Risks and Liabilities

Gordon Gunn, is an Associate Partner in KPMG’s Risk and Resilience Advisory Services Practice in Victoria. He attended the University of Victoria and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He is a Chartered Accountant, a Certified Information Systems Auditor, a Certified Management Consultant and a Project Management Professional. Gordon is just completing a three-year term as President of the Victoria Chapter Financial Management Institute of Canada. Gordon has been actively involved in many not-for-profit boards and assists many NPOs in enhancing their board operations and governance structures.

Gordon has over 29 years experience in public accounting, auditing and consulting, and for the past 19 years has concentrated on providing services to the public sector in British Columbia. Gordon provides advisory services in governance, enterprise risk management, strategic planning, performance management, and information risk management. He is a product champion for KPMG’s Delivering Winning Strategies service in British Columbia and has facilitated planning sessions for numerous organizations.

Building on the information presented earlier, Gordon will inform the audience further about serving on a Board, the risks and liabilities of serving on a board, legal obligations of directors - individually and as a group, resourcing boards - how to attract, grow and keep board members, “evergreening” your volunteer board - including succession planning, ethics-related issues, key controls and you, taxation and boards, accounting and accountability.

Stephen Mooney is VP Sales and Marketing at Carbonetworks and is responsible for global sales growth and strategic business development initiatives. As one of the company founders he has worked with key stakeholders in the public and private sectors to shape Carbonetworks product capabilities and influence the company's position in the emission management market. Prior to joining Carbonetworks he served in a sales/business development capacity in the Pharmaceutical and Wireless sector as well as an entrepreneur in eco-tourism. Stephen is a graduate of The University of Calgary and The University of Victoria, from which he has an MBA.

Chris Corps, MRICS – Principal, Asset Strategics, Ltd. (http://www.astrics.com/)

Presentation: Green Value - Valuing Sustainability

Chris Corps is Principal of Asset Strategics Ltd. providing land and business economic and management advice, with 27 years' experience in both Canada and Europe. He has been a leader in a unique range of subjects including sustainable development, valuation, expropriation, P3s and led the business case for changes to seniors care in BC. He created development methods used in 16 countries and is currently co-editing standards changes applicable in 132 countries. Chris is a former chairman of the Canadian arm of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS - the world's largest valuation profession), and has led industry efforts to better understand the value of Green Buildings. He also led and co-signed an Accord of North America's valuation professions to collaborate on accounting standards changes.

Prior to founding Asset Strategies in 2004, Chris was at the British Columbia Buildings Corporation, where he had various responsibilities including Senior Advisor, Project Office Director and led BC Buildings Corporation's Public-Private Partnership involvements. Chris has a degree in real estate management, with an emphasis on asset valuation, development, investment & finance.

Green Value is an international study of the link between cost, value and sustainability, initiated and led by Chris, who will talk about the impact on assets and value for both government and the private sector. The presentation will also cover some of the pitfalls of accounting for sustainability, and the possible impacts from forthcoming changes to accounting standards.
