A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CLASS 3-A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SOFTBALL SQUAD FROM ORANGEBURG PREPARATORY SCHOOL ON ITS 6-5 TITLE VICTORY OVER NORTHWOOD ACADEMY OF CHARLESTON, AND CONGRATULATING THE LADY INDIANS AND COACHES ON THEIR GUTSY EMERGENCE FROM THE LOSER’S BRACKET TO GRAB THE CROWN THAT HAD ELUDED THEM SINCE 1987.
Whereas, the Lady Indians of Orangeburg Preparatory School broke out of the loser’s bracket to claim the South Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (SCISAA) Class 3-A state softball title from Northwoods Academy of Charleston on May 5, 2001; and
Whereas, the 6-5 win earned the gutsy girls their first state softball crown in fourteen years; and
Whereas, the triumphant team garnered the trophy only after handing the Northwood Lady Chargers back-to-back defeats; and
Whereas, the knock-out blow was from the bat of shortstop Salley Nash, driving in Shelby Salley from third in extra innings, after a Sabrina Puckett - Keri Davis - Puckett double play limited the Chargers’ scoring to one run in the top half of the extra period; and
Whereas, starting pitcher Laura Bonnette and reliever-rightfielder Allison Weaver combined to earn the statistical credit for the win, it was the true team effort that delighted catcher Erin Gleaton, the only returner from last year’s oh-so-close attempt for the title last season; and
Whereas, head coach, Felder Evans, and his assistant, Mark Nash, never doubted the talent and determination of their all-star roster: Allison Blackwell, Deidre Bonnette, Laura Bonnette, Brantley Boltin, Tiffany Cain, Keri Davis, Erin Gleaton, Megan Jones, Katie Mixon, Salley Nash, Kim Pluta, Sabrina Puckett, Shelby Salley, and Allison Weaver; and
Whereas, the State of South Carolina is proud to acknowledge the success of the Orangeburg Preparatory School softball program. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly recognize the South Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 3-A state championship softball squad from Orangeburg Preparatory School on its 6-5 title victory over Northwood Academy of Charleston, and congratulate the Lady Indians and coaches on their gutsy emergence from the loser’s bracket to grab the crown that had eluded them since 1987.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Lady Indians Head Coach Felder Evans on behalf of the Orangeburg Preparatory School.
