A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE STEPHEN H. SMITH OF SPARTANBURG ON BEING NAMED THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION’S NATIONAL CHAIR OF THE BOARD AND TO THANK HIM FOR HIS SUSTAINED DEDICATION TO THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND ON A NATIONAL LEVEL.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina express great pride in congratulating Stephen H. Smith of Spartanburg on being named the National Chair of the Board of the American Diabetes Association and the first chairman from South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Smith graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and then began his twentyone year career with the Community Financial Institutions of South Carolina where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer. In 1995 he founded Capitol Strategies, Incorporated, a lobbying and consulting firm which represents business interests in governmental forums and has successfully handled more that six hundred fifty items of state legislation and regulatory initiatives; and

Whereas, Stephen H. Smith has been very active in professional associations throughout his career. He has served as the National President of Savings Association Trade Executives and President of South Carolina Society of Association Executives; and

Whereas, Mr. Smith’s activity with the American Diabetes Association has been extensive, including the Association’s Columbia, South Carolina chapter, the National Board of Directors, the National Chair of the Government Relations Committee, and now the Executive Committee; and

Whereas, Mr. Smith was a founder of the Diabetes Initiative of South Carolina, a highly successful education and outreach program, and he recently lobbied for South Carolina’s new legislation mandating diabetes insurance coverage, which is recognized as the most progressive in the United States; and

Whereas, Stephen H. Smith will make his first appearance as Chairman at the Association’s Annual Meeting Saturday, June 23, 2001, in Philadelphia; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is delighted to recognize Stephen H. Smith for his commitment to the fight against diabetes and for his being named the National Chair of the Board of the American Diabetes Association. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Stephen H. Smith of Spartanburg on being named the American Diabetes Association’s National Chair of the Board and thank him for his sustained dedication to the American Diabetes Association in South Carolina and on a national level.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Stephen H. Smith of Spartanburg, South Carolina.
