Section III – Hazards Identification
ROUTES OF ENTRY
/ Inhalation? Yes / Skin? Yes / Ingestion? Yes
HEALTH HAZARDS (Acute and Chronic): ACUTE: Eye: causes irritation. May cause transient corneal injury. Skin: Causes irritation. May be absorbed through the skin. Ingestion: Causes gastrointestinal tract irritation with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. May cause central nervous system depression. Hearing loss and deafness have been reported. CHRONIC: May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause cancer according to animal studies. Prolonged exposure may cause mental changes such as hallucinations, depression, psychosis, and possibly coma. Possible risk of harm to the unborn child.
COMPONENTS LISTED AS CARCINOGENS OR POTENTIAL CARCINOGENS: Potassium bromate
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF EXPOSURE: Irritation and/or burns of eyes, skin, digestive tract, and respiratory tract, dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, hearing loss
MEDICAL CONDITIONS GENERALLY AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: Skin conditions, respiratory conditions, iodine sensitivity
Section IV – First Aid Measures
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Get medical aid immediately. Skin: Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Discard contaminated clothing in a manner which limits further exposure. Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. Inhalation: Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid. Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Section V- Fire-Fighting Measures
FLASH POINT (Method used): Not flammable / AUTOIGNITION TEMPERATURE: None / FLAMMABLE LIMITS / LEL None / UEL None
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Use water only. Do not use dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, halon, or foams.
SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH, and full protective gear. Use water spray to keep exposed containers cool.
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Potassium bromate is an oxidizer, which greatly increases the burning rate of combustible materials.
Section VI – Accidental Release Measures
STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED: Absorb with inert material, then place in a chemical waste container.
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: Dispose of in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Section VII – Handling and Storage
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORAGE: Store at room temperature, capped.
OTHER PRECAUTIONS: Use proper personal protective equipment.
Section VIII – Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION (Please specify): Follow OSHA respirator regulations found in 29 CFR 1010.134 when necessary.
VENTILATION: Provide local exhaust or general dilution ventilation.
PROTECTIVE GLOVES: Wear appropriate gloves. / EYE PROTECTION: Wear appropriate protective glasses or chemical safety goggles.
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: None
EMERGENCY WASH FACILITIES: Provide an eye-wash fountain in work area.
