High,

The object before you is an index to Milwaukee’s own underground hippie antiestablishment newspaper, Kaleidoscope. The index analyzes volume one, issues 1 thru 26 (October 6-19, 1967 thru November 8-21, 1968); with any kind of luck and stamina, a similar index will later appear for volumes 2+.

There are three sections within: subject index with accompanying list of subject headings used, “see” and “see also” references, etc.; author index, including any signed article; and graphic index which includes both artists’ names and types of art work. Between the lot, hopefully, no substantial achievement has been omitted; those items excluded by arbitrary decision are most ads; about half the letters to the editor—mostly those saying what a fantastic job Kaleidoscope was or was not doing—and minor pieces of unsigned art work appearing as fillers . Outstanding peculiarities of indexing include:

1)Reviews are listed under what is being reviewed (book, movie, record) by the producer (writer, artist) of the book or record or the name of the movie. The name of the reviewer appears in parentheses.

2)Poetry is listed under that heading in the subject index by name of poet.

3)If an article is illustrated with a photo or graphic related to the subject of the article, it is indicated in the subject index entry. If the art work is not related to the subject, it is given a separate entry in the graphic index under artist and/or type. Thus, if illustrations related to the Milwaukee 14 are desired, it would be more fruitful to look under the subject heading than to search thru the graphic index.

4)The subject heading “Milwaukee Community” refers to Milwaukee’s hip community.

5)A subject heading “Columns” has been used to list by title those columns appearing in volume one. In addition, if a column as a whole dealt with one subject, it is also included under that subject. Provincial anarchy is an exception since each column has been analyzed both under “Columns” and under the individual subject of each column.

6)Subject headings are broad to eliminate the one-entry heading. In some cases division within a heading has not been done, mostly out of laziness. For example, a division between high school and college protests has not been made; the subject heading “Civil Rights, Community Action, Etc.” has been so (poorly) phrased to include such divergent groups as the ACLU and the Black Panthers (Titles of articles are most often explicit, however.); other catch-all headings have been used, particularly “Reality”, which picks up those more philosophic commentaries on the present, interpretations, etc.
