(2) ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY

SEMESTER ASSIGNMENT SHEET

The following is a list of photography assignments to be completed during the semester, in order to meet the requirements for the course. These assignments will be completed as indicated and the due dates will be assigned to each. The assignments will be explained in detail when the due date is given. Assignment credit follows the assignment grade sheet and rubric.

1. REFLECTIONS: Shoot photos using different reflective surfaces to distort or change a subject and give it an unusual appearance. Mirror, smooth water, polished chrome or painted surfaces work well. Shot an entire roll of film on various surfaces. Pick the best two shots you have and print one 8x10 each. Mount the best print in your portfolio and on mat board. You will be turning in 1) a film record sheet, 2) a contact sheet, 3) one 8x10 photo mounted in your portfolio, 4) the same 8x10 photo mounted on mat board, and 5) a composition photo essay.

2. SELF PORTRAIT: Using a Camera with a timer and setting the camera on a stable base, shoot a roll of film of yourself in different situations for a self-portrait. Try to be creative or funny to capture your self as you think others see you. Print two 8x10 prints and mount the best one for display. You will be turning in 1) a contact sheet, 2) one 8x10 photo mounted in your portfolio, 3) the same 8x10 photo mounted on mat board, and 4) a reflection/interpretation photo essay.

3. WORLD OF ANIMALS: Choose and shoot a roll of film photographing from one or more of the following categories and submit the two best and most creative 8x10 prints. One of the prints will be mounted for display. Excellent assignment to be done in color! Select from these categories:

A. People and Pets Tiny to Tall – must include a person(s) and animals(s) together.

B. Dog, Man’s Best Friend – photos of a dog(s) only.

C. Enchantment of Cats – photos of a cat(s) only.

D. Farmyard Friends – photos of horses, goats, llamas, cows, etc., wit/without people.

E. Call of the Wild – wild animals native to our area of animals in the Wild Animal Park or San Diego Zoo.

You will be turning in 1) a contact sheet, 2) one 8x10 photo mounted in your portfolio, 3) the same 8x10 photo mounted on mat board, and 4) a photo essay.

4. NATURES HARMONY AND SCENIC PHOTGRAPHY: Photos of nature at its best. See assignment sheet for details. Print the best two 8x10 photos and mount one for display. Excellent assignment to be done in color! You will be turning in 1) a contact sheet, 2) one 8x10 photo mounted in your portfolio, 3) the same 8x10 photo mounted on mat board, and 4) a photo essay.

5. PAINTING WITH LIGHT: Documentation Photography. Painting with light is a technique that is used to document objects in the areas of catalog photography, industrial photography for insurance purposes. After bringing several items from home, you will shoot a roll of film of these items using this technique. All photography will be completed in the classroom. See the assignment sheet for a complete explanation. Print 2 8x10 prints and mount one for display. Use school camera. You will be turning in 1) a contact sheet, 2) one 8x10 photo mounted in your portfolio, 3) the same 8x10 photo mounted on mat board, and 4) a photo essay.

6. DIGITAL IMAGE MANIPLATION: Find several photographs of your own including one magazine photo. Using the computer, scan all photos. Copy parts of your own photos and merge them with the magazine photo. You will be making a completely new photo. Color or B & W photos may be used. Print the new manipulated photo. Turn in all original photos along with the newly manipulated digital photo. You will be turning in 1) a contact sheet, 2) one 8x10 photo mounted in your portfolio, 3) the same 8x10 photo mounted on mat board, 4) a photo essay, and 5) all original photos.

7. MULTIPLE PRINTING: Using a standard enlarger, creatively blend images together from two or more negatives, to make a totally new and more unusual final photograph. You will be turning in 1) one 8x10 photo mounted in your portfolio, 2) the same 8x10 photo mounted on mat board, 3) the two original negatives, and 5) a photo essay.

8. EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT: Reflections contest! See competition rules.

9. FINAL PROJECT: Series. Open subject to tell as story or explain how to do something or tell someone how to get from one place to another. Project (8-10 photos) will be mounted for presentation on a large mounting board or individual boards for each photo, including captions or titles. Color and/or black and white photos may be used. All color photos must be your own printings. Give an oral presentation to the class about your project. You will be turning in 1) contact sheets, 2) 8 to10 8x10 photos mounted in your portfolio, 4) the same 8x10 photos mounted on mounting board(s) with title/captions, and 5) a formal self critique photo essay.
