1a At home, well fed, rich, inhospitable, strange, hunger, own country, to adapt, hardship, varied.
Original Survivors
The Aborigines were at home in the unique Australian landscape. They knew hardship, but usually their diets were rich and varied. By contrast, the first European settlers found Australia strange and inhospitable. They expected it to be like their own country and did not know how to adapt to such different conditions. As a result, they suffered from hunger and thirst while the Aborigines, whom they considered primitive, were well fed.

6b Sydney is the largest city in Australia. A joke says that there is a city in Australia, called Sydney and all the rest around is the bush. The bush for Australia is something opposite to town. It is the natural countryside of Australia.
Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is not one of Australia/s largest cities, but it is certainly one of the most important.
Australia is the home of Australia/s government and embassies from around the world. It is also the educational and scientific centre, where we can find a great number of places of interest. The name Canberra comes from the Aboriginal word /Kamberra/ meaning meeting place.
The population of ‘Greater Canberra’ is less than three hundred thousand people. The air here is fresh and crisp. No wonder the people of Canberra love to spend their time outdoors.
Australia’s national landmarks are located in Canberra. The National Gallery, the Science and Technology Centre, the High Court and the Old Parliament House are all here.

-Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Bob and I like to welcome you all to my native town of Sydney. We couldn’t see everything in Sydney today, of course, but I think we’ll find it modern enough to keep us interested. Well, let me tell you about our scenery, and if you have any questions, just ask. Naturally, we start with the Opera House. It’s, probably, the most famous building in Australia. From the Opera House we will be visiting onto the Rocks and then the Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair. Mrs. Macquarie was an Australian governor’s wife. And the chair was, actually, made for her by some of the convicts, so she could sit and look at the Harbour. The Rocks is the place, where the first settlers in Sydney landed in 1798.
-Sorry, where will we go first?
-The Rocks, we will be visiting them after the Opera House. Now, from Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair it’s down the museums, first Hyde Park Barracks. Then we’re going to the Australian Museum, where we’ll get the chance to study Australian plants and animal life.
-Sorry, could you say it again?
-Sure. The Australian Museum. We will be looking at some of Australian plants and animal life. Then we are going to the Darling Harbour, where you’ll heir about 2000 Olympics. Then we will be visiting the National Maritime Museum. The National Maritime Museum is near the Sydney Aquarium Museum, where we can see 5000 types of Australian fish, could you believe? We won’t go there today, but if you like, you’ll go there tomorrow, on Wednesday.
-It sounds good. Why not?
-Why don’t we go there today?
-We are short of time. We have a lot to see.
-If you are ready, ladies and gentlemen, we will begin.
7 A kangaroo, a rabbit, an emu, a buffalo, a crocodile, a koala, a parrot, a kookaburra
10 - What are your reasons for visiting Australia?
- What should you know before you go to the country?
- What did you see in Australia?
- What cities did you visit?
- What places do you advise to visit? Etc.
