Explanatory notes
1Definitions
Special features refer to a coach tour or an overland tour provider’s point of difference. Examples may include but are not limited to – vehicle type and specifications, itinerary, optional excursions.
Travel industry workplace policies and procedures refer to documented instructions about workplace expectations, these must include but are not limited to – customer service delivery, personal presentation, legislation, organisational structure, business objectives.
Suppliers,in the context of this unit standard, may include wholesalers, general sales agents and/or direct suppliers.
Overland tours refer to scheduled tours that are usually adventure tours and take place in a truck and/or similar vehicle using camping grounds, backpacker lodges and/or the outdoors for accommodation.
2This unit standard may be assessed against in a travel industry workplace when appropriate situations arise, or in a training environment if simulated workplace conditions are able to be provided that reflect the standards of a travel industry workplace.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of coach tours operating outside New Zealand.
Evidence requirements
1.1Coach tour providers are identified in terms of the regions in which they operate.
Rangeevidence is required for three coach tour providers.
1.2Coach tour providers are identified and compared, and comparisons explained in terms of their special features, and the services and facilities they offer.
Rangespecial features and services may include but are not limited to – age range, pricing;
evidence is required for a minimum of two coach tour providers.
1.3Coach tour terminology and/or abbreviations are explained in accordance with supplier information and travel industry usage.
Rangemay include but are not limited to – single supplement, pre-tour, post-tour, reverse itinerary, v.v, meal plans, escorted, tipping, tour director, local guide, visit, view, see;
evidence is required for five in total.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of overland tours operating outside New Zealand.
Evidence requirements
2.1Overland tour providers are identified in terms of the regions in which they operate.
Rangeevidence is required for two overland tour providers.
2.2Overland tour providers are identified and compared, and comparisons explained in terms of their special features, and the services and facilities they offer.
Rangeevidence is required for a minimum of two overland tour providers.
2.3Overland tour terminology and/or abbreviations are explained in accordance with supplier information and travel industry usage.
Rangemay include but are not limited to – food kitty, local payment, local guide, tour leader, driver, special interest, group, optional extras, single supplement;
evidence is required for five in total.
Outcome 3
Establish customer requirements, source information, and prepare, compare, and explain quotes for coach tours and overland tours operating outside New Zealand.
Evidence requirements
3.1Information is obtained from the customer to determine the customer’s needs, preferences, and expectations.
Rangeinformation may include but is not limited to – purpose of trip, duration, departure date, expectations and interests, preferred places to visit, budget, services and facilities, special services required, age.
3.2Information is sourced and quotes are prepared and comparisons made, in accordance with the planned itinerary, the customer’s needs, preferences, and expectations, and travel industry workplace policies and procedures.
Rangeevidence is required for two different quotes.
3.3Quotes, inclusions, and exclusions are explained to the customer in accordance with travel industry workplace policies and procedures.
Rangeinclusions and exclusions may include but are not limited to – meals, entry fees, visas, tipping, special airfare offers in conjunction with coach tours.
3.4Terms and conditions are explained to customers in accordance with supplier’s procedures and travel industry workplace policies and procedures.
Rangepayment conditions, reservation conditions, cancellation policy.
Outcome 4
Complete a reservation for a coach tour and/or an overland tour operating outside New Zealand.
Evidence requirements
4.1The reservation is made in accordance with customer’s requirements, supplier’s procedures, and travel industry workplace policies and procedures.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
