Objective:

To pursue a leadership position that leverages my skills and experience with infrastructure technology, management, and project management at Stanford.

Experience:

2/2007 – present: Technical Manager, Unix Systems & Applications, IT Services, Stanford University

  • Team Leadership: Directly manage a team of up to 10 systems administrators, with indirect responsibility for up to 14. Responsibilities of the team included the systems administration of Unix systems for other parts of IT Services, systems administration services for other departments, and the administration of centrally provided online services including e-mail, authentication, and distributed file systems. Implemented new standards and processes to ensure the responsible and responsive administration of systems, and hold staff accountable to those standards.
  • Business Development: Focus on bringing new clients (Economics, Procurement, Public Affairs, Genetics) to Unix Systems, while also continuing to build relationships with current clients, including Humanities and Sciences and Residential and Dining Enterprises.
  • Finance: Ongoing development and rationalization of rates for cost recovery services, including systems administration and high performance compute clusters. Refactored the way that Unix Systems charges for centrally provided services to be based on staff effort and time tracking data rather than system count. Responsible for staying within budget and forecasting for Unix Systems as well as for several centrally funded services.
  • Project Management: Responsible for the successful completion of Unix Systems projects and strategic initiatives, including:
  • CMDB: Acted as development manager and business analyst for the CMDB project. Supervised design and build of a reference implementation using the CMDBf standard for communication and correlation of system and service configuration data between existing IT Services data sources.
  • Server Virtualization: Managed a team of 5 technical experts during the design and implementation of IT Services virtualization environment, including hypervisor and storage technology evaluation, rates development for cost recovery, and coordination with key clients.
  • AFS Backups Migration: Migrated AFS backups from TSM to a native AFS backup mechanism. This allowed us to move these backups off of the BARS service and onto much less expensive central storage offering, saving $35K/month within the operating budget.
  • Linux Service Provisioning: Converted all Linux systems to use common build systems and a single server automation infrastructure (Puppet) that is now the centerpiece of the Unix administration service. As a result, the Unix team implemented regular patching cycles and configuration updates and has auditable configuration on all systems.
  • IT Services Governance: As part of the Services Portfolio team, advise on strategic direction and review business plans for services and technologies across IT Services. On the IT Services rates committee, review financial proposals for cost-recovery services. Presented at Systems Governance Group and Business Affairs meetings for IT Services on Authentication Enhancements, Secure AFS, and SUNetID for Life projects.
  • Strategic Planning: Wrote and revised large portions of the Computing Services technical strategy. Researched and collected stakeholder input to build a cohesive roadmap in areas where IT Services had been fragmented in its approach (Workflow, Service Oriented Architecture).
  • Middleware: Serve as subject matter expert on Identity Management and Middleware policy and technologies at Stanford by presenting on IT Services topics as a member of the Identity and Access Management working group, participating in the Middleware green field effort with SULAIR, the Registrar’s Office, and Administrative Systems and writing a technical strategy for the next generation of Stanford’s identity management framework. Coordinating a new set of IT Services/Administrative Systems meetings on Middleware topics, including the potential transition of the SUNetID system from Administrative Systems to IT Services.

1/2005 – 1/2007: Project Manager, IT Services, Stanford University

  • Project Management: Responsible for the successful, on-time, and on-budget completion of major IT Services initiatives and client-focused projects. Wrote and presented charters, project plans and budgets, resolved resource conflicts, coordinated consulting efforts, led meetings, and coordinated communication for projects such as:
  • NetDB 4.0: Managed a team of 3 developers and 2 QA engineers to complete a major rewrite of NetDB software and the migration of database layer from Sybase to Oracle.
  • Kerberos 5 Migration: Managed a project team of up to 9 people to move services and clients using Kerberos 4 to Kerberos 5, including AFS and e-mail. Overhauled Stanford's desktop presence to use available open-source products.
  • Shibboleth: Managed a team of 6 to implement a federated identity management framework for Stanford. Enrolled Stanford in InCommon, the primary higher-education focused federation.
  • Data Center Strategy: Worked with architects, contractors, and IT Services business units to design a major renovation to the North Campus data center. Budgeted a $3M server migration plan for the newly renovated data center. Team member on the Data Center Strategy effort to define Stanford's medium- and long-term goals for machine room space.
  • Audits and Compliance: Coordinated with internal and external auditors and drafted the management response to findings. Created and implemented action plans and to mitigate those findings. As a member of Stanford's HIPAA risk assessment committee, reviewed IT Services and external applications for compliance.
  • Governance: Participated in IT Services project governance process for 2006 and 2007. Worked with IT Services, Administrative Systems, and SULAIR to propose and budget strategic initiatives and SGG-funded projects, such as Shibboleth, Kerberos 5 Migration, Guest Accounts, and NetDB, 4.0.

5/2000 – 12/2004: Systems and Database Administrator, ITSS, Stanford University

  • Sunetid2 Project: Designed and implemented new database and processes for provisioning SUNetIDs with computing services. This database receives data from the Registries, activates services, and posts service-specific data back to the account Registry. Migrated existing account data from Sybase to Oracle and into the current schema.
  • Registry Data Administration Lead: Coordinated the efforts and communication of a 5-person data administration staff. Worked with the help desk to provide training and tools. Responsible for resolving SUNetID and account service provisioning problems, which required knowledge of inter-system data interaction and knowledge of trouble spots in the information architecture.
  • Systems Administration: Deployed several versions of RegAdmin, WebLogin, AFS and the Workgroup, Authority, Organization, and Sponsorship Managers. Worked with developers to create installers and managed release cycles for these applications. Primary administrator for Stanford's AFS cell.
  • Database Administration: Maintained databases for account provisioning and database classes. Worked closely with faculty and course staff for setup and operational profile of the class database.

5/1999 - 4/2000: Quality Assurance and Database Administration, Macromedia Pathware/Lotus LearningSpace

  • Quality Assurance: Developed and implemented test plans for acceptance, depth, and load testing of the Pathware/LearningSpace application. Ran AICC Computer Managed Instruction certification test suite against the product and worked with the development team to interpret results.
  • Database Administration: Installed and administered test, development, and demo databases for the product team. Helped develop the database utilities and made modifications to the application schema.
