Title / Maintain and repair a power boat trailer

Purpose / This unit standard is for people in the powerboat repair industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of boat trailer servicing requirements; maintain and repair boat trailer components; and inspect and advise on boat trailer performance.

Explanatory notes

1 The following legislation, regulations, standards, and their amendments are required to be consulted and followed where applicable:

– Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992

– Traffic Regulations, 1976

– Warrant of Fitness Inspection Guide, Motor Trade Association

– NZ Standard 5232.

2 Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.

3 Because of the particular nature of this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of boat trailer servicing requirements.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Boat trailer design requirements are identified.

Range tilt and fixed boom, loading requirements, balance, towability, corrosion protection, security of fixtures, restraints, warrant of fitness requirements.

1.2 Suspension systems and tyre requirements are identified.

Range single and multi-axle trailers.

1.3 Wheel bearing and hub servicing requirements are identified.

Range checking bearing and hub condition, renewing bearings and seals, lubrication, adjustment procedures.

1.4 Wiring requirements and electrical fittings are identified.

Range protection of wiring, routing, types of lamps.

1.5 The operation and servicing requirements of light trailer brakes are described according to brake manufacturer’s specifications.

Range hydraulic and mechanical.

1.6 Types of couplings and ball sizes are identified.

Range NZ Standard 5232.

1.7 The hazards of incorrect wiring of trailer plugs to towing vehicle's electrical system are described according to vehicle manufacturer’s specifications and Traffic Regulations.

Range damage to vehicle's electrical system, incorrect operation on the road.

1.8 Water immersion protection of trailer parts is described according to manufacturer’s specifications.

Range corrosion protection, brakes, wheel bearings and seals.

1.9 Servicing requirements for winches, rollers, and guides are identified.

Range checking damage, security, lubrication, guide and roller alignment, operation.

Outcome 2

Service and repair boat trailer components.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

Range personal safety, safety of others, workshop safety.

2.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used to enable the trailer repairs to be carried out.

2.3 Customer requirements are determined and noted before work is carried out.

2.4 Trailer components are inspected to ensure that the trailer complies with the Traffic Regulations, and faults are recorded on a check form for this purpose.

Range lights, couplings and safety chain, tyres, wheel bearings and suspension, rust or corrosion, mudguards, dangerous fittings, reflectors, brakes, body security.

2.5 Servicing work is carried out according to customer’s requirements.

2.6 Trailer components are repaired to Warrant of Fitness standards.

Range brakes, suspension, wheel bearings, couplings, winches, rollers and guides, lights, restraints, wheels and tyres, brackets and accessories, frame, lights.

2.7 Corrosion protection treatment is carried out to employer’s and customer’s requirements.

Outcome 3

Inspect and advise on boat trailer performance.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.

Range personal safety, safety of others, workshop and boat safety.

3.2 Boat and trailer are inspected to determine safe loading and transportation.

Range loading requirements, balance of rig, towability, ease of launching and recovery, operation of winch, guides and rollers, boat security, roadworthiness.

3.3 A report on boat trailer performance is given to the supervisor based on an inspection.
