Version 3 was republished in order to extend the expiry date of this qualification to 31 December 2019. This qualification has been reviewed and replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Meat Processing (Animal Product Examination) (Level 3) [Ref: 2482].

It is recommended that candidates currently enrolled in this qualification who will be unable to complete the qualification by the 31 December 2019transfer to the replacement qualification listed above.

This qualification contains expiring unit standards for which replacement unit standards have now been registered. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the replacement unit standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the expiring unit standards.

Purpose

This is a standalone qualification for people who are, or wish to become animal product examiners in the poultry industry. The compulsory section recognises the generic skills and knowledge needed for entry into the examination of poultry including hygiene practices, quality assurance and legislative requirements.

The elective sections provide candidates with the opportunity to recognise specialist skills and knowledge required for pre-slaughter and post-mortem examination of poultry as well as a range of additional skills and knowledge to suit their particular position of work. Skills and knowledge related to quality management, communication, health and safety, food safety, production of poultry products, and generic meat processing are included.

People who have been awarded this qualification can continue on a career pathway to the National Certificate in Animal Product Examination Services with strands in Sheep and Goats, Lambs, Cattle, Horses, Pigs, Bobby Calves, Deer, and Ostriches and Emus, and with optional strands in Other Species, and Pre-slaughter Examination Services [Ref:0785].

Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided in section 7 of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Rules and Procedures publications available at
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). People currently working towards version 1 of this qualification may either complete that version or transfer their results to version 2. The last date for entry to programmes or courses leading to version 1 is 30 June 2010.
