The Headlines

  • Peace talks to resume next Wednesday as opposition consultations end in Pagak today.
  • Nearly 200 trucks of fuel expected in Juba in the next few days.

AND

  • Petroleum and mining ministry to issue licenses early next year.

Peace negotiations between the government and the opposition are expected to resume next week.

IGAD mediators have invited the warring parties back to Addis Ababa in time to start the next round of talks on the 17th.

The talks were adjourned for 15 days to allow both sides carry out consultations. Abdeta D. Beyene, chief of staff of office for the IGAD special envoys says they are working on the agenda.

“We are working on it, what exactly we will be tabling; we are working on it. But you recall the summit ended giving the principals 15 days for consultations expecting that the principals will report back to the summit on the issue, we are thinking about reconciliation, about peace about resuming negotiations lets keep it at that – we have to be optimistic”.

Meanwhile a consultative meeting called by the opposition ends today.

The delegates have been gathered in the town near the border with Ethiopia for the past few days deliberating on their position in the Addis peace talks.

Head of the opposition delegation, Taban Deng says the delegates are discussing ways of addressing of the root causes of the conflict, accountability and distribution of powers between the President and Prime Minister in an interim arrangement.

Taban says up to 5,000 participants fro in and out of the country are attending the consultations.

“The conference is going on well, it is going according to plan, we have an attendance of more than 5,000persons, these people re from all walks of life from South Sudan from the ten States and from Sudan Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and from the diaspora. The most difficult areas here are the concern of the people about accountability – people are asking for justice and accountability. The area of a structure leadership, people are calling for a structure of President, Prime Minister and Vice Prime Minister, and implementation of a federalism immediately after the signing of peace, we must implement federalism.”

Australia has expressed its interest to supporting the country’s mining sector.

This came after the Australian ambassador, Geoff Tooth met petroleum minister Stephen Dhieu Dau in Juba.

Minister Stephen Dhieu Dau says the Ministry will begin issuing mining licenses early next year.

Two hundred trucks of fuel are expected in Juba in the next two days.

Petroleum and mining Minister, Stephen Dhieu Dau says the fuel is being brought in from Mombasa – Kenya to ease a current shortage.

Dhieu says to prevent future shortages; the Ministry is working on building a storage facility in Central Equatoria.

The Minister says land for the depot has already been identified in Nesitu, east of Juba town across the River Nile.

“The ministry and the Oil company Nile-Pet are working to avail fuel so that citizens do not suffer although the fuel scarcity is beyond the control of the ministry whoever we made an agreement with the state government central Equatoria to allocate a vast piece of land in Nessiro area to build fuel depots to store fuel , we expect the facility will be officially opened July.Now there is problem of diesel in the town , we expect the arrival of two hundred trucks of Petrol in the next two days”.

The Central Equatoria State Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested three Senior Officials of ABT Farm Project for failing to respond to a case raised by an employee of the project.

The employee was terminated by the company but raised the case with the Labour Office in the State but the Company officials could not respond for the case.

The State Labour Office forwarded the case to State Anti-Corruption Commission where the officials have been summoned by the commission to answer the case.

Chairperson of the State Anti-Corruption commission, Emmanuel Khamis says the officials are now in prison for failing to respond to three summonses.

“After the first hearing we issued three subsequent summons in accordance with the provisions of section 28 (1) of South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 requiring three individuals who are senior staff of ABT Farm Project to appear for hearing of the case. And they are now under detention at the Northern Police Division in Juba Town. They have been charged under section 110 of the South Sudan Penal Code Act 2008 and most likely they will have to be produced to appear before the courts of the law.”

Khamis says the case file was report to the State Anti-Corruption Commission in October this year.

Four people have been killed in what has been described as a dispute over a botched marriage in Gogrial West County of Warrap state.

A gunman dressed in military uniform attacked the family on Tuesday and shot and killed four people onspot.

The director Warrap state Criminal Investigation Department, Captain Machol Deng Atem, says the suspect was also killed after he resisted police arrest.

“During the process of arresting the suspect, the suspect was shot to dead – because he is destroying the priority burning the houses like he had burnt three tukul, one tukul was full with 38 goats. Yes, he has killed four people and one policeman is injury seriously)”

Youth in Yirol County, Lakes State have cautioned politicians against using the youth to further their own interests. Speaking at events to mark International Human Rights Day at the Yirol Freedom square, youth representative Abraham Mou Magok said rights of the youth are not being respected.

“Youth are only group who have been denied their rights, they have rights to education, they have right to live, they have right to express themselves, they have right to speak their mind but now in this era, youth are denied, we are denied because of this political turmoil because political sometime they used us a tool to an their interest, now we they youth we are vulnerable people, if today UNMISS or United Nation come up with this day to be celebrate on every ten December, every year which mean we have to talk to our government ,to UN Agencies such that they give us our rights”.

“Every child has a right to life and not subjected to exploitation , all children must be accorded with all their rights, especially rights to education; it is a responsibility of the elder people, the community leaders and government authorities to respects and protect the rights of our citizen wherever they may be, the rich become richer in the expense of the poor who always become poorer through exploitation must be stop that is corruption”.

In regional news, a group of HIV-positive women in Kenya has taken legal action against the government, accusing it of arranging for them to be forcibly sterilised.

The five women are demanding compensation from the government and the non-governmental organisations they say carried out the sterilisations.

Activists protested in the capital, Nairobi, to call for the practice to be banned, claiming it was widespread.

The government has not yet commented on their allegations.

The National football association says it is waiting for formal communication from the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations – CECAFA on the status of the CECAFA regional football tournament.

The tournament was supposed to have taken place from the 24th of November to the 9th of December, but did not take place after hosts Ethiopia withdrew over unclear reasons.

The general secretary of the association William Akot says they are waiting for CECAFA to clarify on whether the tournament has been postponed or cancelled.

And, the National Athletics Federation is holding competitions across the country to select athletes for a National athletics team.

At least 25 participants took part in different categories of competitions at the Buluk playground in Juba on Wednesday evening.

“This competition it comes within our program to select our national team, and this is the state number seven to host this competition ,in the last weeks we have finalized our programs in western Equatoria and we have chosen the players from Western Equatoria and from Western Bahar El Gazal and Warrap and northern Bahar el Gazal , this competition it aims to select our national team which is going to participate on match and on February in Ads Ababa in African Athletics competitions and in Ads Ababa also the youth international Athletics competition”

The athletes selected will make up the squad that will represent the country in the 2015 East and Central Africa Athletics qualification competition and the African Youth Championships – to be hosted by Ethiopia.
