Assistant city editor, Arizona Republic / azcentral.com, Phoenix, AZ, September 2006 – present —Responsiblefor planning and editing all coverage of the city of Phoenix, fifth largest in the U.S., for both print and online publication across seven-day and 24-hour news cycles. Supervising a team of five reporters, coverage includes two tabloid sections of local news published three times a week tailored to specific zones in the city; breaking news and enterprise for both our Metro and Page A1 sections, and continuous content for our web site, including breaking news, features, blogs, slide shows, video, and other multimedia. Readership exceeds360,000 daily. Online readers range from 700,000 to 1.2 million per month.Additional duties include representing the Republic with city and state leaders, mentoring reporters with our Spanish-language newspaper / web site, La Voz, and recruiting interns for our summer program.
Editor, EXTRA!, a weekly Arizona Republic section aimed at English-speaking Latinos, Oct. 2005 -Sept. 2006 —Planned all coverage, including news events, sports, education, business and general assignments. Coordinated and edited freelancers, wrote a weekly column.
State government reporter, Arizona Republic, June 2002 – Oct. 2005 —As a member of the three-reporter Capitol team, covered daily news, Sunday enterprise and weekly political insider column. Issues ranged from regional transit tax, $600 million deal to expand Phoenix convention center, immigration, and other legislative priorities.
Phoenix City Hall reporter, Arizona Republic, Oct. 2000 – June 2002 —Covered Phoenix city government, including transportation, budget, development, council and elections.
Tempe City Hall reporter, Arizona Republic, April 1999 – Oct. 2000 —Responsible for all city coverage for the daily paper and specific zones. Covered the construction of the Valley’s largest man-made lake, elections and budget.
