100% cult: Hagen von Ortloffin "active retirement"

For a quarter of a century Hagen von Ortloffhas been the heart and soul of SWR's programme "Eisenbahnromantik"and delighted his fans with many romantic and adventurous rail journeys. In 2016 the programme celebrated its big anniversary, after which Hagen von Ortloffwent into retirement. But his "active retirement" sees him still on track and devoted to his passion - railways and model railways. For the first time at FASZINATION MODELLBAHN in 2017 he and his co-engine driver Lutz Mäderwill present little model railway gems from the late 1940s and early 1950s. Their quaint miniature trains by manufacturing companies Löhmannand Staigerare rare examples of model railway history and a special treat even for experts, as they were only produced for a few years.

After WW2 the production and supply of model railways from renowned brand manufacturers to the retail trade was slow in picking up again.During this period, some lesser known companies developed new, smaller railway sets. As early as 1947 a model railway from the Black Forest town of St. Georgen came on the marketwith a French-sounding name that was to become well-known: the dainty little electric railway "Mignon" made by Staiger Brothershad a track width of only 10 cm. In 1948 the Stuttgart-based company Löhmannintroduced their miniature electric railway "Präzix" in TT gauge(12 mm).The interestingcharacteristic ofLöhmann'ssmall railway was its three-phasealternating current system.Hagen von Ortloffand Lutz Mäderbring these iconic miniature railways back to life on their layout, giving fascinating insight into the history of model railways. A remarkable highlight not only for railway romanticists.

100% modelrailways - in practice and theory

The focal point of the exhibition alongside the fantastic shopping opportunities is of course the hands-on active experience of the world of miniature railways.Numerous activity stations at exhibitors' stands such as Märklininvite rail-enthusiastic visitors of all generations to take part in the ultimatemodel railway experience. Visitors are able to create buildings and landscapes, design a diorama at JuniorCollege Europa held by BDEF, or experience the unlimited joy of railway modelling by testing their skills atfree-style construction, operating a modelor simply 'playing trains'. The railway modelling community can gather practical tips from the experts, useful knowledge and information on the latest digital features and innovative productsby trying their hand at the railway layouts on display or in the popular Model Railway Forum. For the entire duration of the fair the forum offers workshops on current topics, practical lectures for example on light electronics, sound and digital systems, and manufacturers will present their latest models. Videos of legendary train journeys all over the world round off the programme.
