Challenges

The following challenges were experienced during the implementation of the Pilot Project B by teachers and administrators:

  1. Challenge A - PLAR Challenge process overwhelming for students while attempting to achieve success in a college course.
  1. Challenge B - More closely align high school cycle of program delivery to College schedule of program to facilitate transition of students to college
  1. Challenge C - Increased number of secondary students seeking access to College Prep classes

Lessons Learned

We would do the following differently and/or sooner:

  • Make faster connections with the Student Advisement Centre and the Career Centre to facilitate earlier access to resources for students
  • Continue regular communication with college staff is essential to the success of the program
  • Establish earlier communication with Public Transportation system to enable high school students to access student fares while attending a high school class on a college campus.
  • Facilitate college mentorship program prior to the start of college integration course so students can begin contact with a mentor upon entry to the program.
  • Determine in advance appropriate ratio of secondary students per college prep or General Arts and Science Classes
Recommendations
  • Continue secondary school class on college campus and determine ways to allocate resources on the college and school board side for these programs to continue in the long-term
  • Continue to support this initiative for the effective transition of “at-risk” students to college
  • Support the expansion of programs to a College Prep Technology program to provide secondary students with a preview of college technology programs and access to technology equipment while earning secondary technology or experiential learning credits
Students’ Perspectives

Student excerpts:

  1. Student A

“Thishas provided an opportunity for me to get my high school diploma and attend college in January 2006. I would have had to wait until September 2006 to get into college but the flexibility of the program allowed me to quickly work through courses so as to finish for January admission to Fanshawe.” SM

  1. Student B

“I have tried to go back to school many times but without success. This program helped me to be with students my age and get the credits I need to graduate while going to college. I am able to learn in a college environment while catching up on courses I missed due to medical reasons.” MP

  1. Student C

“This has given me and so many other students a second chance at a future….I feel so grateful and lucky to have been given a chance to prove that I could succeed even when all odds were against me.” CS
