1 JOB TITLE Assistant Rebbetzen

REPORTS TO: Honorary Executive – Stanmore United Synagogue

WORKING HOURS: Full Time

SALARY: Competitive remuneration package (depending on experience)

including accommodation

JOB SUMMARY

Stanmore United Synagogue is one of the largest Synagogues in the UK, with a considerable number under the age of 30. Recently our Community Rabbi of longstanding announced he will leave at the end of the year. Alongside an assistant rabbi with the passion, drive and enthusiasm to drive the community forward, we desire to have an assistant Rebbetzen who can engage new members, existing members who aren’t currently active, the youth, young marrieds and young families.

We are looking for a candidate who can help our members feel engaged, empowered and a valuable part of the community, whatever their contribution – and to make Judaism relevant for their lives.

This role will be split between youth leadership (50%), supporting young marrieds and young families (20%), teaching and engaging with adult women (20%) and pastoral support (10%),

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:

To discharge religious, educational, and pastoral responsibilities in conjunction with other members of the rabbinical team

The Assistant Rabbi & Rebbetzen will join the rabbinical team which currently comprises the Senior Rabbi & Rebbetzen.

Key areas of focus for this position will include:

·  To support programmes for youth / young adults in conjunction with the existing team of youth workers

·  To provide support for young adults and young married members (with or without children); and reach out to those who are not yet members

·  To become an integral member of the religious leadership team and to engage with and become connected to the community

·  To deliver other new initiatives and projects (to be decided)

·  To help identify and engage potential leaders and volunteers in the wider community

·  To support and develop activities for women and girls within the community.

·  Be a role model to women in the community and provide mentoring when necessary/requested

3 POSITION IN ORGANISATION

Report to Chairman (or in his absence, Vice Chairman) of Stanmore and Canons United Synagogue

4 NATURE & SCOPE

Children and Youth

·  To seek engagement and connection with young people and their families, providing leadership for them and such activity to be carried out in co-ordination with the other members of the rabbinic and youth team

·  To attend training provided by Tribe when required

·  Working closely with Tribe and community and youth leaders, to promote central Tribe events including Learn2Lead and Tribe Summer Camps.

·  To host young people and their families for Shabbat and Yom Tov

·  To work closely with and support existing committee of volunteers who organise events for children

·  To oversee programmes for girls on a regular basis (e.g. on Shabbat morning) to enhance their Jewish learning

·  Involvement in youth programming

·  Contributing to planning of activities and club

Young Marrieds and Young Families

·  Support and bolster existing programme of events for Young Marrieds and

Young Families.

·  Organise and attend community events

·  Work with Executive/Board of Management member responsible for Young Marrieds to develop a programme of relevant and engaging activities

Adult Women

Responsibility for overseeing activities for women, in particular:

Giving regular shiurim to women

Planning and arranging learning opportunities for women

Offering women in the community opportunities for informal educational or mentoring on an as-and-when basis

Learning with brides when appropriate

The Assistant Rebbetzen will be responsible for a selection of projects, worked on in rotation, including:

·  To provide a presence and support during family simchas within the community where appropriate.

·  To take an active interest in the social needs of the community

·  To be open to acting as a public presence in the community on occasion – eg public speaking, writing Habimah articles.

·  Responsibility for overseeing activities for girls (from year 5), in particular:

o  Planning and arranging learning opportunities for girls including informal educational or mentoring on an as-and-when basis

o  Line management of madrichot working with girls in the community (both employees and volunteers); assisting them to plan activities for girls

o  Acting as a mentor to girls in the community on an as-and-when basis

·  Responsibility for batmitzvah liaison with parents of batmitzvah girls

·  Liaising with rabbinic team and youth workers re: needs of girls in the community

·  Attending events and trips where possible with consideration for Rebbetzen’s own family commitments

5 HOURS

The working hours are those reasonably necessary to achieve the job description and should average 15-20 hours per week.
