St Paul’s has been at the heart of the City of London for 1400 years. Offering thanksgiving and service to God since its foundation in 604 AD by St Mellitus, a follower of St Augustine, the Cathedral remains a place of worshipand wonder to all who pass through its doors.

The plans for the present St.Paul’s – the fifth church on this site and the masterpiece of its architect Sir Christopher Wren – received approval from King Charles II in 1675 after the Great Fire of London destroyed the previous Gothic cathedral in 1666. Wren’s design took only 35 years to realise, and was the first English cathedral to be completed within the lifetime of its architect. It remains one of the world’s great buildings.

This magnificent building has hosted many important events. These have included the State funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill; the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria; the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana; and the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elisabeth ll.

Inside the Dome, 163 steps up (left) from the Cathedral Floor, is the Whispering Gallery. A whisper spoken against one wall of the Gallery can be heard 32 metres away on the other side of the Dome.

Westminster Abbey is a working church with a daily cycle of prayer and an architectural masterpiece.Edward the Confessor founded the Abbey in the 11-th century and it was largely remodelled from the 13-th to the 16-th centuries. The building we see today was begun by Henry lll in the Gothic style in 1245.

The Abbey has seen the coronation of every English monarchs since William the Conqueror in 1066 and it is home to Coronation Chair. It has also witnessed countless royal and state occasions including weddings and funerals.

The Abbey provided the burial place for over 3000 people ranging from Elisabeth I to Charles Dickens and the Unknown Warrior from World War l.

The Palace of Westminster, more commonly called The Houses of Parliament, includes both the House of Parliament and the House of Lords. Surviving Guy Fawlkes’ attempt to blow up, the palace burnt down in 1834 and was rebuilt to designs by Sir Charles Barry and his assistant Augustus Pugin. The House of Commons Chamber was then destroyed by German air attack in 1941 and rebuilt by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The building incorporates the awesome Westminster Hall, built by William the Conqueror’s son in the 11- th century, when it was the largest in Europe. The hall was the part of the Old Palace of Westminster, which remained the monarch’s residence until 1512.

BIG BEN AND THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT were built after the old palace burnt down in 1834. The building contains the House of Lords and the House of Commons. On the corner next to Westminster bridge stands St. Stephen’s Tower, which houses the famous bell, Big Ben, which chimes the hours. Walk round the far end of the Houses of Parliament to Big Ben, which takes its name from the clock’s 13-ton bell.

Buckingham Palace was built in 1830. “I’ve been so happy there”, Queen Victoria wrote in her diary in 1843 when leaving the palace for one of her residences.

There are some 600 rooms in all the palace, including those used by staff. The rooms occupied privately by the Royal Family are few in number. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have a suite of about 12 rooms on the first floor overlooking the Mall.

Queen Victoria Memorial is in front of the Buckingham Palace. It was conceived in 1901 by Queen Victoria memorial Committee. A 13 ft seated figure of Queen Victoria made of one block of marble is surrounded by what is called “allegorical females” figures: Charity (west), Truth (south), Justice (north). On the pedestal there is a gold-winged figure of Victory with figures of Courage and Constancy at her feet.

Trafalgar Square and Nelson’s column was erected in 1843 to commemorate Admiral Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The column is 51 m tall and four majestic bronze lions, each 6 m long and 3,3 m high, guard the base of column.

Hampton Court Palace is outside London on the river Thames. King Henry VIII (1491-1547) lived here with his second wife, Anne Boleyn. The Palace was built almost 500 years ago. It took just 10 years for Henry VIII to transform Hampton Court from a courtier’s country home into a magnificent royal residence. Much of his majestic Tudor palace still survives today, and is among the most important of its kind of existence.

The Royal Observatory, home of Greenwich Mean Time, was desinged by Sir Christopher Wren in 1675. It is, by an international agreement in 1884, the official starting point for every day, month and year. In the courtyard you can stand astride the Prime Meridian of the World, Longtitude 0° and be in both eastern and western hemispheres simultaneously.

The Old Royal Naval College (in Greenwich) was designed by Christopher Wren as the Royal Hospital for Seamen following Queen Mary’s wish that the King’s House at Greenwich be converted into a hospital for wounded sailors. Work on the present buildings began in 1696 on the site of the demolished Tudor palace, birthplace of Henry VIII and his daughters Elizabeth and Mary. In 1873 Greenwich Hospital was transformed into a training college for the Royal Navy where officers from around the world came to be schooled in the naval science

The Painted Hall (of theOld Royal Naval College) is one of the finest banqueting rooms in Europe. The famous painted ceilings and walls took artist Sir James Thornhill 19 years to complete. In these splendid surroundings, in January 1806 the body of Nelson lay in state after his death at the Battle of Trafalgar, where it was visited by thousands who came to pay their last respect to one of England’s finest seamen.
