A meeting of the Board of Directors (BOD) of the Orange County (OC) Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) was held at the offices of Ninyo and Moore on Monday, 4 August 2008. Bob Yelin, SAME OC Post President, called the meeting to order at approximately 11:57 am, after lunch. Bob welcomed new Board member, Ms. Tonya Compton and guest, Ms. Rubina Chaudhary.

1.  Minutes Review

-  Draft minutes from the July 2008 BOD meeting were reviewed. The minutes were approved with minor modifications.

2. Treasurer’s Report

-  Penny Cornwall, the SAME OC Post Treasurer, presented her monthly report for review by the BOD.

o  Checking - $27,682.38

o  Investment CD - $14,936.28

o  CD (8-mo @ 4.69%) - $10,458.24

-  The BOD discussed the results of having the BOD use Paypal, a method for on-line registration, for the July meeting. One complication is that the money received by this method is not identified as being intended for a specific meeting. SAME OC Post members have been encouraged to use Paypal to register and pay for the August meeting. The eventual objective is to establish if the on-line registration and payment will be suitable for the November Business Opportunities Symposium.

-  Jim Carter reminded the BOD that, by agreement, exhibitors’ fees for Camp Pendleton Day are to be spent in support of Marines. The BOD briefly discussed sharing responsibilities and proceeds for this event with the San Diego Post next year. Because of the large turnout, the event may be held in a bigger venue next year, such as the Camp Pendleton South Mesa Club.

3. Program Committee Report

-  John Cromwell, the OC Post Program Chair, was not present. In his absence, Jeff Davis and Jim Carter discussed the status of the 2008 Program schedule.

o  Jul 24 – Mr. Don Holmes, Executive Assistant Director of Operations, Homeland Security and Construction Management, Port of Los Angeles, Eagle’s Nest, Cypress. The meeting was well-attended, with 41 participants.

o  Aug 28 – Mr. Bill Girolamo of EDSG will discuss Triad, a streamlining process for RCRA and CERCLA Hazardous Waste Sites, Eagle’s Nest, Cypress.

o  Sep 12 – Golf Tournament, Green River Golf Club. So far, only $2,600 in sponsorships have been received, compared to $8,500 last year.

o  Oct 14 (Tuesday) - Scholarship Program, UCI University Club. We still need a speaker for this event. The BOD recommended inviting all of the student applicants for the SAME scholarships to attend the meeting, free of charge. Applicants will also be offered a one-year student membership in SAME, paid for by the OC Post, and asked to introduce themselves at the meeting. The new Young Member Chair, Tonya Compton, was asked to coordinate with the applicants.

o  Nov 20 – Business Opportunities Symposium, Costa Mesa Hilton. Jim Carter, OC Post Symposium Chairman, reported that the presenters for the symposium would include Major General Lehnert, Colonel Magness, Captain Wirsching, along with several others. Jim asked the BOD for their opinions concerning the number, benefits and costs for various sponsorship levels. Chambers volunteered to prepare the graphics for the event.

o  Dec 6 – Holiday Ball, Fort MacArthur.

4. Young Member Committee

- Tonya Compton, the OC Post Young Member Chair, described the upcoming SAME Post Leaders Workshop, September 5th and 6th, in Arlington, VA. Ron Everly, SAME Assistant Regional Vice President, will also attend.

- Several OC Post members attended the Los Angeles Post, Young Member event on 17 July at Ft. MacArthur.

5. New Business

-  At the invitation of Bob Yelin, the OC Post President, Ms. Rubina Chaudhary made a presentation to the OC Post BOD. Rubina described her involvement in CalSOP, a subcommittee of Caltrans District 7/CELSOC Professional Liaison Committee, which was formed to attract more students toward careers in engineering. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez recognized the success of this committee and asked Rubina if a similar organization could be formed to find work for military veterans in the engineering field. Rubina asked the BOD if SAME would be a suitable partner organization in the way CELSOC is a partner to CalSOP.

-  Following some discussion, Bob Yelin asked BOD members Peter Supko, Ron Everly, Tonya Compton and Will Manker to form a committee, with Rubina as the Committee Chair. This group met immediately following the Board meeting and discussed ways the OC Post might support such an initiative. The group dubbed itself the Swords Into Plowshares Committee and agreed to meet again on 16 September at the offices of MARRS Services.

6. Next Meeting
