It has been a long-standing tradition at Eastmont that students enter the auditorium silently.Once they are in their seats, it is expected that their behavior is also very respectful and quiet.Eastmont’s proud tradition of excellent auditorium behavior is famous!!!

1.  Students are expected to enter without talking AT ALL.They enter and sit where you as the teacher indicate they will sit. They do not argue or beg to sit in a certain spot.

2.  Oncethe classenters the hall outside the auditorium, all talking ceases.

3.  Students are not allowed to bring backpacks into the auditorium. When called to the auditorium, teachers instruct their students to enter the auditorium in a polite and quiet manner. Students are to stay with their class.

4.  Once in the auditorium, students are expected to respect the facility by not taking candy, gum, food, or drink into the area. Also they are expected to exhibit positive/courteous behavior by responding appropriately—no booing, whistling, obscene gestures or similar inappropriate behavior.

5.  Teachers stand in the aisle until students are settled, then sit on the aisle near their classes and encourage and model proper behavior. They remain with their students during the assembly.

6.  At the end of the assembly, students will remain seated until specifically dismissed.

7.  Students who refuse to meet basic expectations will be removed from the auditorium and sent to the detention area for the remainder of the assembly.

4. Planner, Academic and Citizenship Grades, ZAP, Concept Mastery, Patriot Time

  1. Your planner is to be used every day in every class period. Your planner is to document assignments and upcoming tests. It is also where your teacher will stamp your planner for assigned concept mastery sessions (during Patriot Time) and other valuable information. Your planner is ESSENTIAL to helping you stay organized!
  2. What happens if you don’t have your planner? Your teacher will immediately send you to the office where one of the administrators (Mrs. Kurtzhals, Mr. Hellwig, or Mrs. LeCheminant) will document you don’t have your planner and make a phone call home explaining to a parent the importance of having your planner. If you continue to not bring your planner there will be consequences assigned – it is that important!
  3. School policies and rules are printed in the front of your planner – please review and know what rules you need to be aware of.
  4. Hall pass is your planner – sign out in the back with teacher initials before you use the hall pass. Even to get a drink of water. Even to use the restroom. If you go anywhere during class time you must have your teacher signature on the hall pass page in your planner and you must have your planner with you.
  5. If you need to replace your planner the cost is $5.00 to be paid in the office.

Mid-term grades and term grades are issued three times per school year. Final grades are those that are reported on the term report card along with citizenship grades. All teachers use a standards-based method of grading what the student knows and is able to do. Teachers create their class starters, assignments, tests and quizzes based on content standards that are called “I Can” statements. You will see these in each of your classes every day. Standards-based grading is the most accurate way to reflect what you know and are able to do in each of your classes.

Citizenship Grades are based on classroom behavior, attitude, treatment of others, attendance and punctuality. Teachers should develop a citizenship grading system and be able to justify the grades they give, remembering that the purpose of the citizenship grade is to encourage behaviors and habits that will lead to success in school and later in life.

·  H HONOR—The student seldom, if ever, violates school and/or class rules, takes correction in a positive and productive way, is willing and eager to improve, and initiates positive contributions to the school and class community.

·  S SATISFACTORY—The student does not often violate school and/or classroom rules, is amenable to correction and makes a positive contribution to the school and classroom.

·  N NEEDS IMPROVEMENT—The student frequently violates specific school and/or classroom rules but is generally amenable to correction and makes an acceptable though usually passive contribution to the school and classroom.

·  U UNSATISFACTORY—The student persistently and knowingly violates school and/or class rules, seldom contributes positively to the school or class, and does not respond adequately to correction.

As teachers give short formative assessments following instruction, students who are not gaining mastery are identified. These students are immediately assigned to Concept Mastery class where they are re-taught the missed concept before they get lost. This class is focused on helping the assigned students gain mastery in a specific concept (not just catch up on homework, etc.).

PATRIOT TIME is where all teachers are available to give specific and targeted extra help to identified students. There are five possible places where students go during this time: Concept Mastery, Tutorials, Testing Center, Stretch Learning, Career Exploration, and Study Hall.

ZAP - when you do not complete homework as assigned you will receive a ZAP ticket from the teacher:

  1. The student takes the ticket to the front of the lunch line, picks up their lunch and reports immediately to the ZAP (ISS).
  2. The student works on homework that has not been turned in while eating lunch. Homework completed in ZAP is turned into the ZAP supervisor.
  3. If the student does not finish, the student and the supervisor call home to let parents know and gain permission for the student to stay after school to finish the work.

4.  If a student has a finished assignment they have not turned in or a partially completed assignment they must bring it to ZAP and stay in the ZAP room for lunch.

5.  Once the student has reported to the ZAP room the student will not be allowed to go to a locker, another classroom, etc. to get their work. They will have to do it over, including coming to ASD if it is not finished during the lunch period.

6.  Students who are ZAPped 10 times are required to stay after school for a mandatory one hour ASD. After 16 ZAPs the student will be required to come to Friday Morning School in addition to the ASD. ASD and Friday Morning School require parent permission. If a student has 10 or more ZAPs and then goes 10 school days without a ZAP they will be reset back to 5 ZAPs.

5. How Middle School is Different from Elementary School

The activities of the middle school—government, drama, music, assemblies, etc.—play a very important part in helping students get ready to move to the high school. These programs:

·  help students learn more about themselves by helping them to develop their talents

·  help students feel good about themselves and others

·  help students learn to work cooperatively with others

·  reinforce academic achievement

·  provide an opportunity for students to use their talents and energies constructively to help them better enjoy school and to feel more needed and worthwhile in the school setting.

Athletics and Intramurals: “The middle school athletic program shall be broad based, intramural program. Emphasis shall be placed on participation and skill building rather than on competition . . . Interscholastic competitive sports programs shall not be sponsored by middle schools.”

Salt Lake County and Sandy City basketball programs are organized using middle school boundary areas. Eighth grade students may try out for the teams designated as the EMS 8th Grade Girls or Boys Basketball Team although the school itself does not sponsor those teams.

District intramural offerings will include cross-country, 3-on-3 basketball, 5-on-5 soccer, and chess.

All foreign language students are given the opportunity to participate in the Foreign Language Week at the school.

Math students of advanced skill are invited to participate in the Math Counts program. They receive enrichment instruction after school and compete with students of other schools.

8H: Each student who receives all H citizenship grades on their report card can earn this award. It occurs each quarter. A certificate is awarded and students receive a student card sticker allowing them some privileges. They also have a special treat given to them.

Students who earn straight A’s are recognized each term as members of The A Team.

Consistent Scholastic Improvement (CSI) students who bring up their grades by increasing their grade point average one-half grade are honored each quarter and receive a certificate and treat.

Honor Roll Students who earn a 3.5 term grade point average are Honor Roll members and will receive an honor roll certificate and treat.

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is open to eighth grade students who exhibit the qualities of leadership, service, citizenship, scholarship, and character are invited to join the National Junior Honor Society. This group meets monthly, holds activities, and is involved in service projects in and out of the school.

No-Tardy Party each term students who are on time to every period in a term are recognized with an invitation to a party in the cafeteria celebrating their effort at being on time. They receive a treat and have the chance to have their name drawn out of a box to choose a prize.
