WYLLIE

I. WILLIAM WYLLIE (or WYLIE, the name was spelled either way indifferently, until towards the close of the 18th century), Laird of Gallowberry, Stewarton parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. Gallowberry had been in the possession of the family for about two hundred years prior to this owner. Pont’s “History of Ayrshire”, published in 1605, stated that Gallowberry had been “owned by the Wyllies for several generations.” However, this William Wyllie is the first of whom we now possess authentic information. He was born about 1560, married Janet Langwill, and died in June 1616. Their son and heir was John of whom below (II). They also had a daughter, Janet.

II. JOHN WYLLIE of Gallowberry married Isabel Fulton or Filtonne. John died in May 1669 and Isabel died in November 1670. Issue:

2. Margaret, who died unmarried in November 1670

3. Two sons, Thomas and Alexander and two daughters, Helen and Elizabeth. Their relative ages are unknown and no further information exists.

III. JOHN WYLLIE of Gallowberry, living in 1713 when he executed an instrument of Sasine in favor of “one very discreet young man, James Wyllie, his lawful son and heir”. John Wyllie appears to have married twice, first to Martha Anderson, whom he “isfefted” with the life rent of a third of some lands in 1688; and second to Jean Knox who was his wife in 1713, as shown by the instrument of Sasine, mentioned above. He had issue (mother unknown), all being mentioned in the Sasine instrument of 1713.

A. James Wyllie of Gallowberry, married first August 13, 1720 to Margaret, daughter of James Stevenson of Nether Carswell. Married second to Ann Boyd. He had issue of whom at least the first two were sons of the first wife, uncertain as to the rest.

ii. John Wyllie of Mossyde, Ayrshire, an estate purchased in 1736. He married in 1744 to Marion, daughter of John Ferguson of Auchintiber. Issue:

a. John Wyllie of Mossyde, Ayrshire, who had a son, James Wyllie, born in 1785 and married Marion Wark. His son and heir was Alexander Wyllie, and he had a son, John Wyllie, Professor at Edinburgh University who died unmarried c. 1921.

B. James Wyllie of Gallowberry, married in June 1755 to Jean Guthrie. He died c. 1771. Issue:

ii. John Wylie of New Mills, Ayrshire, married Margaret Flemming. Their descendants all emigrated to America before the Civil War and are mostly living in Illinois.

iii. Alexander Wylie of Fullwood, Ayrshire, married Jean Allison. Their descendants also came to America before the Civil War and are living in Illinois, Tennessee, and California, et. al.

iv. William Wyllie of Little Fenwick, Ayrshire, married Jean Wylie of Hawket. Issue:

a. William Wyllie, of whom no information

b. James Wyllie of Little Fenwick, whose descendants are still in Ayrshire.

c. John Wyllie, who imigrated to Illinois c. 1847

d. Jean, married James Reid of Rowallon Castle, Kilmarnock; their daughter Jean married a son of the preceding John Wyllie.

e. Janet married David Cuthbertson and came to America.

(It was in this generation that the spelling of the name became fixed, as there noted.)

C. James Wylie of Gallowberry, born on September 26, 1756, living in 1820. Married unknown. Issue:

i. James Wylie, the heir, who succeeded his father at Gallowberry, but died unmarried and the estate passed to his brother John.

ii. Thomas, died without issue.

D. John Wylie, of Gallowberry, succeeded his elder brother James. Married Mary Steven who died on December 11, 1888 at age 65. Issue:

ii. Marion, who had one son

iii. Mary, who had two children, John and Minnie

iv. Thomas, died without issue

v. Dr. John Wyllie, who left a son, John in the Royal Navy, and a daughter Olive, living with her mother at Fullwood, Ayrshire

vi. William, who went to America. He died in 1925.

vii. Agnes, married Ross Hamilton of Glasgow and had three children, Mary, Agnes, and John

E. James Wylie of Gallowberry, died in 1917. Married Agnes Dunlop of Merrymouth. Issue:

i. James Wylie of Gallowberry, who succeded his father, but died unmarried at age 21 on August 12, 1924, when the estates passed to his uncle Robert, of whom below (F).

ii. Mary, died unmarried

iii. Agnes, living now, married.

F Robert Wylie of Gallowberry, son of John above (D) who succeeded his nephew, James, in 1924. Died in December 1929, at age 65. Married Elizabeth Gilmour of Motherwell. Issue:

i. Harold Gilmour Wylie of Kilmarnock

ii. Robert Hamilton Wylie of Gallowberry, which he inherited in 1929, under his father’s will.

iii. Gladys Steven, married Evan Gregory of Edinburgh

IV. ALEXANDER WYLLIE (son of John Wyllie above, III). Issue:

1. James Wyllie, eldest son, living in 1780. Procurator Fiscal for county Forfar. Issue:

a. James Wyllie, of whom no information exists

b. Thomas Wyllie, of whom no information exists

c. John Wyllie, of whom no information exists

d. William Wyllie, who became a planter in Barbadoes and had a son

i. William Morrison Wyllie who married Katherine Benham. Issue:

a. William Lionel Wyllie, Royal Academician, born in July 1851 and died on April 6, 1931. Married in 1879 to Amy, daughter of Captain George O’Brien Carew C.I.E., Indian Marines, a son of Sir John Hearsay, K.C.B. Issue:

i. Captain Harold Wyllie, Royal Flying Corps

ii. Major William Thomas Wyllie, Durham Light Infantry, born 1882, killed at the Somne on July 19, 1918. Married in 1912 to Mary, daughter of John Rickards of Fairford, Gloster.

ii. Charles Wyllie, also an artist, died a long time ago.

V. JOHN WYLLIE, second son of Alexander above (IV). Born in 1700 and died in March 1787. Married first Elizabeth Baird. Issue:

1. George Wyllie, born in 1735, died without issue in 1757

3. Robert Wyllie, born in 1741 and died in 1831. Married Margaret Thomson who died in 1787. Issue:

a. Major William Wyllie, Royal Marines. Married Margaret Bruce.

c. Colonel Robert Wyllie. Married Sarah Bruce and died at Gibraltar, with his son Robert.

i. Lieutenant Colonel John Alfred Wyllie, served in Indian Army. Retired in 1909. Married in 1899 to Amy, daughter of Sir Charles Munro, Lotn. Bart. of Foulis, Co. Ross, died in 1888. Colonel Wyllie is still living in Portugal.

ii. Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Wyllie, Indian Army. Retired in 1907, died unmarried in 1934.

iii. Rev. Arthur Wyllie, unmarried and has a parish in Devonshire.

b. Alexander Wyllie, who had six children. Two sons were living in Australia in 1908.

John Wyllie married a second time to Helen, daughter of David Sellers of Craigie, widow of John Shaw of Mosshead, Ayrshire, by whom she had a son, Sir James Shaw, Bart., Lord Mayor of London in 1805 M. P. for City of London, 1806-1818, Governor of the East India Co. Sir James was born in 1764 and died in 1843. John Wyllie had no issue by this wife.

VI. JOHN WYLLIE, Captain Royal Navy, born in 1739 and died on HMS Charleston, off the American coast on August 21, 1781. Married Antonia Crookea and had a son.

VII. JOHN WYLLIE of Holmhead House, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, born on October 9, 1765 and died on November 13, 1843. Colonel Ayrshire Yeomanry. His Majesty’s Surveyor of Taxes for Ayrshire. Married Elizabeth, daughter of William Brown of Dreghorn and Waternaughs, Aryshire, sister of William Brown of Townend, chief magistrate of Kilmarnock. Elizabeth Wyllie died in 1848 at age 81, Issue:

1. Elizabeth, married Hugh Reid. She died in 1899 at age 90. Issue:

a. Hugh Reid, who died unmarried

b. William Reid, who was murdered in America

c. Elizabeth, married Sinclair and had 10 children

d. Nancy, married W. Morton

2. Lieutenant John Wyllie, H.E.I.C.S., Adj. 49th. Bengal Infantry, died in India in 1826, at age 29. He had no issue.

3. Colonel James Shaw Wyllie, H.E.I.C.S. Married Agnes Miller of Monkoaotle, Ayrshire, grandaughter of Patrick Warner of Ardeer House. Issue:

a. John Wyllie, who went to Australia and had 6 children.

b. Major General William Alexander Patrick Wyllie, Royal Artillery. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 1852. In Chinese expedition of 1860 and surrender of Peking, etc., Major General in 1884. Married in 1865 to Marian Christian, who died in 1866, daughter of George Keith Erskine, Captain Bombay Light Infantry, and Salina, who died in 1875, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Chambers. Captain Erskine was the fourth son of David Erskine of Cardross, Perth (born in 1773 and died in 1847). Issue:

i. Erskine Wyllie, Ensign in a Highland Regiment in the Boer War. Resigned and went in with Cecil Rhodes in South Africa.

ii. Lina, married Hemming, a barrister.

4. Janet, died in 1879, at age 84, unmarried.

5. General Sir William Wyllie, G.C.B., born in 1802. Commissioned in H.E.I.C.S., 2nd Lieutenant in 1819. Thanked in General Orders for services in Cuten under Sir Donald Campbell in 1925. Actively engaged from that time in the native wars. As company officer, he was in the 21st. Bombay Native Infantry. He became a Major General in 1854 and a full General in 1871. Died in 1891. Married Amelia, daughter of Richard Hutt of Appley Towers, Isle of Wight, who also died in 1894 at age 84. Issue:

a. John William Shaw Wyllie, C.S.I., born 1835. N.P. for Hereford in 1868; Foreign Secretary for India. Died without issue 1870.

b. Emily, Crown of India, given precedence of a baronet’s widow in 1882. Died in 1906. Married Right Honorable William Patrick Adam of Blair Adam, Co. Kinross, son of Admiral Sir Charles Adam, K.C.B. W.P. Adam was Governor of Madras, Member of Parliament, Liberal Whip, etc. Issue:

i. Sir Charles Elphinstone Adam, Bart. of Blair Adam. Married Dobson, but left no issue

ii. William Keith Adam, born 1861, died in 1920. Married Jane Emily, daughter of George Leake of Perth, West Australia, Attorney General for West Australia. Issue:

a. Robert William Wyllie Adam, born 1889, Sargent in Australian infantry during war, died of wounds received at the Somme, on 25 July 1915.

b. Charles Keith Adam. Royal Navy, born in 1891

iii Frederick Loon Adam, H.V.O., Scots Guards. Military Secretary to the Viceroy of India in 1905. Married to Lilias, daughter of Lord Ashburton. Died in 1907 with no issue.

v. Clementina Mary, Lady-in-waiting to Princess Patricia of Connaught.

vi. Emily Elizabeth. Married in1895 to Major Lionel Fortescue, 17th Lancers, who was killed in action in the Boer War in 1900, without issue. His wife then became Lady-in-waiting to Princess Christian.

vii. Constance Marion, married in 1907 to M. E. Hopwood.

c. Francis Robert Shaw Wyllie. Indian Civil Service. Under Secretary to the Government of Bombay. Died unmarried in 1907.

d. Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Hutt Carzon Wyllie, K.C.I.E., C.V.O., D.S.O., Indian Army. In Afghan War; resident at Rajpootana, political A.D.C. to Secretary State for India. Murdered in London in 1909. Married in 1891 to Katherine Georgi, daughter and coheir of David Fromantle Carmichael, C.I.E. (died in 1903), son of David Scott Carmichael, of the Supreme Court of India (died in 1841) who was the brother of Sir James Carmichael, Bart. Katherine Wyllie died in 1932, without issue.

7. Jean, died unmarried in 1856.

8. David Wyllie, died in 1818.

9. Mary, died unmarried in 1868.

11. Captain Michael Wyllie, H.E.I.C.S., died without issue in 1887. Married Marral Cam Codener, a widow of Weston, Somerset.

VIII. COLONEL ROBERT WYLLIE, H.E.I.C.S., of Barnstaple, North Devon. Born 1804, died 1872. 2nd Lieutenant in 1821. Military Secretary to the Government of India, under Lord Dalhoisie. Retired in 1851. Married first to Lucy Dennys, of Ashley Park, Tiverton, Devon, by whom he had six children, all of whom died in infancy. Married second to Catherine Maria in 1843, daughter of Humphrey Herbert Jones of Llynon, Anglesey. She was born in 1820 and died in October 1888. Issue:

1. Katherine Jean Elizabeth, born in 1844, died unmarried in 1928.


2. Colonel Robert John Humphrey Wyllie, Indian Army. 2nd Lieutenant in 1863, retired in 1892, died in December 1921. Married Emily, daughter of Bishop Titcomb of Rangoon, who died June 1917. Issue:

a. Arthur Wyllie, born in 1873, died in infancy

b. Frederick Arthur Wyllie, Captain Welch Regiment. Born in 1875, killed in dacoit engagement in Burmah in 1904. Married Lotta, daughter of Rev. Durham, army chaplain. They had a daughter, Winifred, who died in infancy.

c. Ethel Mary, born in 1876, died in infancy.

d. John Shaw Wyllie, born in 1878, Captain in East Lancashire Regiment in World War. Invalided out of service for wounds in October 1913. Married in 1918 to Irene Sargent. Issue:
