TRAININGPROGRAMFORDEPARTMENTOFCOMMERCE WEIGHTS AND MEASURES INVESTIGATORI TRAINEE

I.PURPOSE

Very few,if any, entry levelcandidates forWeightsand MeasuresInvestigator Ipositionshave well‐rounded experience workingwith weighing and measuringdevices.Even candidates from privateindustry involvedin themanufactureor repairofweighing andmeasuring devices normallyhaveexperiencewithonly one or twotypes of devices,andare notfamiliar withthe principalsof legalmetrology, or have experience working as government regulators.A significant training period isnecessary to teachcandidateswith demonstrated aptitudesthe specificskillsthey need to functionsuccessfully as a Weights and Measures InvestigatorI before they are able to work on their own and assumeresponsibility for a territory.

Thistraining program isdesignedto facilitatethe recruitment ofentry level candidatescapable ofmastering the required skillsincludingminority and women applicants in conjunction with theDepartment ofCommerce’s Affirmative Action Program.

II.METHODS FORTRAINEESELECTION

Jobopenings will be postedon thestateemployment website as lightduty orheavy duty territoriesbecomevacant.The postingwillmakeitclear whether the vacancy being posted is a light duty or a heavy duty position.Jobs will also beadvertised on electronicsites orin print publicationsaimed at women and minoritiesinaneffort togetacandidate pool which is representativeof thestate’s population.Applicationisvia resume onthestate employment website. All resumes are reviewedtofindcandidateswhopossessthefollowingprerequisite capabilities:

Ability tointeractinaprofessional manner with awide variety ofpeople includingco‐workers,membersofthe public, businessownersandservice agents,and employeesof other governmentagencies suchasthe DNR and the MPCA;

Ability to communicate complextechnicalinformationcoherentlyin both written

and verbal formats ;

Ability towork independently with littlesupervision andto manage scheduling and

routingwork ina large territory;

Computerskills sufficientto work froma remotelaptop througha VPNconnection;

Mechanicalskills sufficientto maintain theirvehicles,testequipment andstandardsingoodcondition, as wellastoassess thelikelihoodof mechanical tamperingin the weighing andmeasuring devices theyinspect;

Physical abilitytowalk,stand and sit forextended periodsoftime, tolift up to fiftypounds repeatedly throughout the day, and to workoutsidein allweatherconditions for up toten hours a day;
